With a heavy heart, today I honor the life, teachings, and soul transition of my beloved teacher and conveyor of Yogic knowledge.

I will remember as an extraordinary man whose heart could be seen in his boyish smile while playing cricket or when he was around children.

He always said Ashtanga is a practice for householders and I have immense gratitude for his exemplification of this…
always holding and playing with the children in the shala, open practice time for the mamas and papas, creating a space upstairs for families with children to practice, giving candies to the littles encountered walking on the streets of Gokulam, and a rose to my precious Kaia post practice outside the shala.

He embodied and embraced the practice healing himself from a childhood illness on the brink of death’s door to a life of yoga, family, and worldly contributions in both the seen and unseen realms. With integrity, compassion, and devotion; he upheld a lineage and responsibility passed on to him.

Thank you Sharath for Seeing me and Allowing me the space to go beyond what I once thought that I was capable of. Thank you for sharing your energy and your gifts. Immense gratitude to have been in your presence a year ago today not knowing if and when I would ever get to practice with you again.

Sending immeasurable love and light to the Jois family and to my Ashtanga family. Mahalo Nui 💜💫🙏
Aloha Sharath.
A Hui Hou.

Sraddha Faith Trust (and maybe a little pixie 🧚 dust 😉).

Trust in my own strength to stay firmly grounded while dropping back with heart wide open.

Bend don’t break.

In times of great despair and hardship, we may fall to our knees, hoping and praying for a shred of strength to pick ourselves up. Be still and listen. Practice the medicine of faith.

Our lives are filled with opportunities to reexamine ourselves, to course correct, to break cycles, and to create change. With time, faith can lead to deeper insights guiding us to our most authentic selves. Through these opportunities, we create compassion and empathy which allow us to share ourselves with others in this human experience.

Passionflower 💜

“Native peoples of the Americas used passionflower as a sedative. Sixteenth-century Spanish explorers in South America learned of passionflower. The plant was then brought to Europe, where it became widely cultivated and was introduced to European folk medicine.

Today, passionflower is promoted as a dietary supplement for anxiety and sleep problems, as well as for pain, heart rhythm problems, menopausal symptoms, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is applied to the skin for burns and to treat hemorrhoids.”

Finding freedom within the ties that bind. Freedom within structure.
Freedom within boundaries.

Pasasana is the first asana of the Ashtanga intermediate series. It is derived from the Sanskrit words pasa, meaning “noose,” "lasso", "tie", "bind", "bond", "web", “entanglement,” or “snare,” and asana, meaning "pose" or “posture."

In yoga philosophy, it can symbolize a tie or bond that traps people in samsara (the cycle of life, death, and rebirth) as well as being trapped in physical, emotional, and ideological patterns.

A bind can also symbolize a relationship, a connection, or a commitment both physically and psychologically.

High in antioxidants, Mamaki is an endemic Hawaiian herbal medicine. It is soothing to the nervous system reducing the effects of stress and inflammation.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, it regulates liver qi, harmonizes the middle burner, and clears damp heat in the lower burner.

It has commonly been used for insomnia, irritability, tissue cleansing, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, fatigue, high cholesterol, digestive issues, liver health, colic, thrush, depression, menstrual irregularities, and bladder infections.

Research found Mamaki extract to be anti-viral in vitro against Herpes simplex 1 & 2; anti-bacterial against Streptococcus pyogenes & Staphylococcus aureus, and anti-fungal [Locher 1995].

“From a cultural, medicinal, and ecological perspective, it is clear that māmaki holds great importance and deserves further exemplification. By promoting māmaki, it is the hope of this review to increase the awareness surrounding this incredible plant, hopefully supporting beneficial economic and medicinal outcomes that serve to better indigenous communities and the Hawaiian Islands as a whole.”

The only constant is change…

Letting go in order to allow space for unexplored possibilities.

Embracing the limitless potential of “Shakti” energy.

Shakti encompasses the divine feminine’s destructive and creative forces. She is the power of change, the energy that moves. Shakti is the divine mother; the source, protector, and sustainer of all life.

In Hindu mythology, she is the feminine counterpart to Shiva and represents the many aspects and embodiments of the divine goddesses including Kali (the goddess of destruction and creation), Durga (the goddess of strength, protection and motherhood), Parvati (the goddess of fertility, marriage, and beauty), Saraswati (the goddess of knowledge) and Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth).

In Buddhism, she is known as Tara, the goddess of unending compassion, mercy, and action. The one who hears the cries and suffering of the beings of earth. She is referred to as the Wisdom Goddess, the Goddess of Universal Compassion, and the Mother of all Buddhas.

In Hawaii, she is known as Pele, the goddess of divine passion, lightening, wind, dance, fire and volcanoes. She is said to reside within the fiery depths of Kilauea Volcano here on the Big Island. She represents the beautiful creation cycle of death and rebirth. Pele is known as “She-Who-Shapes-The-Sacred-Land”.

Her energy pervades many religious mythologies and spiritual philosophies throughout history and holds valuable insight into the nature of our human existence.
