A Message from Dr. Raj Goswami: Understanding Weight Loss Medications
For years, calorie-controlled diets and regular exercise have been the foundation of weight loss programs. However, with the rise of medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, more people are considering adding prescription treatments to their weight loss journey.
Are Weight Loss Medications Effective?
Obesity affects over 40% of adults in the U.S., and for those with additional weight-related conditions, the numbers are even higher. Because weight management is complex, a comprehensive approach—including diet, exercise, and sometimes medication—is often necessary. While weight loss medications can be effective, they are not suitable for everyone and should be considered as part of a broader, long-term strategy.
Understanding Popular Weight Loss Medications
Ozempic
Ozempic (semaglutide) is an FDA-approved medication for managing type 2 diabetes. It mimics a natural hormone that signals fullness, slows digestion, and helps regulate blood sugar. While Ozempic is not FDA-approved specifically for weight loss in people without diabetes, many individuals using it for diabetes management experience significant weight loss.
Wegovy
Wegovy, which contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic, is FDA-approved specifically for weight management. It is prescribed for individuals with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have weight-related health conditions or for those with a BMI of 30 or greater. Studies show that Wegovy can lead to an average weight loss of about 15% after 68 weeks.
Both Ozempic and Wegovy are taken as weekly injections and require a prescription.
Weight Loss Medications vs. Over-the-Counter Supplements
It’s important to distinguish between prescription weight loss medications and over-the-counter fat-burning pills. Many supplements marketed as “quick fixes” lack scientific backing and are not regulated for safety or effectiveness. In contrast, prescription weight loss medications have been extensively studied and are used under medical supervision to support long-term health goals.
How to Choose the Right Approach
While weight loss medications can be helpful, they are not a “magic bullet.” Sustainable weight loss requires a combination of healthy eating, regular physical activity, stress management, and good sleep. Medications can be a tool, but they work best when paired with lasting lifestyle changes.
Some patients use weight loss medications temporarily while building new habits, while others remain on them longer. The right approach varies for each person, and it’s important to have an informed discussion with your doctor.
If you’re considering weight loss medication, I encourage you to schedule an appointment so we can review your options together. My goal is to help you find a safe and effective path to better health, tailored to your individual needs.
