Dornetta Newland, age 79, of Taylorsville, passed away on February 21, 2026, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Dornetta was born on January 21, 1947, the daughter of the late Robert L. Newland Sr. and Addie Elizabeth Brawley Newland.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026 in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Sterling Howard and Pastor William Little will officiate. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery Hwy 90 East of Taylorsville.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Douglas Michael “Mike” Benfield, Sr., age 74, of Hiddenite, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at his home.
Mike was born May 13, 1951, in Caldwell County, the son of the late Ray Benfield and Alma Teague Benfield.
Mike attended Taylorsville High School and was a retired truck driver of 30 plus years and served in the United States Army. He was a member of Linneys Grove Baptist Church.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Max Benfield.
Those left to cherish and honor Mike’s memories include: his wife, Doris Burch Benfield; his sons, Michael Benfield and wife, Jennie, Jerrod Benfield; his grandchildren, Jamison Benfield, Esther Benfield, Eleck Benfield, Kendall Benfield, Micah Martin, Hunter Martin; a great-granddaughter, Ellora Teague; his sister, Judy Little (Harry); and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Antioch Baptist Church followed by the funeral service at 4 p.m. Pastor Curt Miller, Dr. Marcus Benfield, and Pastor Chris Benfield will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Linneys Grove Baptist Church.

Travis Grant Hodges, age 47, of Lenoir, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 in Caldwell County.
Travis was born on December 15, 1978, in Watauga County, the son of Gil Edward Hodges and Judy Wilcox Berry.
Travis was of the Christian faith. He loved to go fishing with his family and he also enjoyed playing card games and watching movies. He had a good sense of humor.
Those left to honor and cherish his memories include: his mother, Judy Berry and step-dad, Ronny Berry; his father, Gil Hodges and step-mother Vivian Hodges; his brother, Darrick Hodges and wife, Kitty of Lenoir; a nephew, Bruce Hodges; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, February 22, 2026 in the Lenoir Church of Christ Cemetery: 1126 Powell Rd. Lenoir, NC 28645.

Anna Claudine Carpenter Avery, age 90, of Taylorsville, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Trinity Village.
She was born September 26, 1935, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Delma Ray Carpenter and Luna Zora Matlock Carpenter.
Claudine graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in science and was a member of First Baptist Church in Taylorsville. During her working career she was a social worker, volunteer Coordinator at Hospice of Alexander County, she was the first paid Director of Christian Crisis Center in Taylorsville. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star #58 and Stony Point DAV.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Alphonso C. Avery III (former Mayor of Delray Beach, FL); her brothers, Jimmie Lee Carpenter and Wayne Price Carpenter.
Those left to cherish and honor her memories include: her sister-in-law, Carolyn Carpenter; her beloved and trusted friend, Bernard Bourbonniere.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Adams Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Scott Hensen will officiate. Inurnment will be the family.

Mark Allen Norris, age 65, of Taylorsville, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at his home.
Mark was born August 3, 1960, in Alexander County, the son of the late Howard Norris and Marie Tester Norris.
Mark worked for Broyhill Furniture for 40 years. He was a hard worker and loved his horses, and a dedicated NASCAR fan. He dearly loved his family, friends, and his companion, Bella.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Norris.
Those left to cherish and honor Mark’s memories include: his wife, Karen Moser Norris of the home; his daughters, Angie Harrington (Isreal) of Taylorsville, Cassie Norris of Iron Station; his grandchildren, Sage Cook (Justin), Gracie Harrington, Skylar Harrington, Hallie Harrington, Jaddin Norris; his great-grandchild due in April, Cayson Cook; his sisters, Anita Jenkins, Rhonda Mitchell (Lee), Karen Stafford (Mark) all of Taylorsville; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Bessie Lee Black, age 80, of Statesville, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville.
Bessie was born June 1, 1945, in Iredell County, the daughter of the late Roy Shoemaker and Adeline Cook Shoemaker.
Bessie was a seamstress for most of her working career for Hunters Brothers and Zimmer. She was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church and also attended Liberty Baptist in Iredell County. She loved sports, coaching soccer and football. She loved her family and spending time with them.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Hack Shoemaker.
Those left to cherish and honor Bessie’s memories include: her sons, Jeff Black (Allen) of Statesville, Dorson Black of Statesville; her grandchildren, Moriah, Dylan, Devan Black; seven great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Carolyn Shoemaker; and many other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Rocky Hill Baptist Church with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 1 p.m. Pastor Daniel Milton and Pastor Roger Holland will officiate. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery.

Kenneth “Kenny” Watt Poole, 76, of Taylorsville, passed away at his home after a period of declining health on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
Kenny was born on January 6, 1950, in Iredell County, to the late Rom and Anne Watt Poole.
Kenny was a graduate of Taylorsville High School and Appalachian State. He was a retired school teacher who loved to share his passion of history with his many students over a period of 36 years. When not teaching, he was a member of the Taylorsville Town Council for 22 years serving as Mayor Pro-Tem. He loved golfing at Brushy Mountain, watching the App State Mountaineers play football at the Rock and pulling for the New York Yankees.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 47 years, Linda Tinko Poole; his daughter Whitney Poole-Burroughs, his grandson, Kurtis Burroughs, who was his pride and joy, his brother Herb Poole and wife, Sandy of Statesville, NC, his brother Lee Poole and wife, Susan of Simpsonville, SC, many nieces and nephews, and friends who were more like family.
A Gathering of Friends will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Adams Funeral Home. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Joyce M. Sharpe, age 93, of Stony Point, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Valley Nursing Center.
Joyce was born June 9, 1932, in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Dennis Moose and Sue Chapman Moose.
Joyce was a homemaker and a charter member of Temple Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and VBS and sang in the choir. She was Ms. Stony Point in 1949; she loved to garden and planting flowers.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Rufus Sharpe, Jr.
Those left to cherish and honor Joyce’s memories include: her daughter, Crystal Martin (Eric Charles) of Rock Hill, SC; her grandchildren, Reagan Martin of Charlotte, and Preston Martin of Rock Hill.
The body will lie-in-state from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Adams Funeral Home.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, February 16, 2026, at Temple Baptist Church in Stony Point. Rev. Jim McGraw will officiate.

Lorene P. Barnes, age 95, of Taylorsville, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Carolina Caring in Newton.
Lorene was born February 28, 1930, in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Ray Pennell and Maebelle Herman Pennell.
Lorene was a farmer and a homemaker but previously she worked at Holly Farm and Lewittes. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She loved her flowers, and enjoyed her garden. She loved to cook especially for family gatherings.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Thomas “Tommy” Barnes; her sons, Robert Barnes, Bobby Barnes; 11 brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish and honor Lorene’s memories include: her daughter, Brenda Chatham of Reagan, TN; her grandchildren, Brian Barnes (Jill), Joshua Baker (Angelina), Kevin Hope (Janet), Chad Barnes, Anthony Barnes (Aislinn), Teresa Rivera (Rick), Charles Chatham (Rose), Mark Chatham (Anita), Johnny Chatham; 14 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; her caregivers, Gail Baker and Joyce Barnes.

Virginia “Joy” Elder, age 77, of Taylorsville, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
Joy was born June 20, 1948, in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late James Boyce Allen Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Carpenter Allen.
Joy worked as a CNA II for Alexander County Hospital, Davis Hospital, and Iredell Memorial for over 30 years. She was of the Methodist faith and a dedicated wife, mother, and caregiver. She had a loving and caring heart for others.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Boyce “Jimmy” Allen and wife, Barbara.
Those left to cherish and honor Joy’s memories include: her husband of 57 years, Richard Elder; her daughter, Lisa Kay Elder “love of her life” of the home; her brother, Carl Allen (Tina); and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Graveside Service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in the Elder Family Cemetery. Pastor Tim Jolly and Pastor Jeff Carson will officiate.
Pallbearers include: Shane Elder, Josh Elder, James Goble, Bobby Simmons, Jason Swaim and Nathaniel Kerley. Honorary pallbearers include: A.J. Elder, Dylan Allen, and James Allen.
