The Alexander County Health Department held a Pandemic Influenza Tabletop today hosted by our Preparedness Coordinator, Mallory Barnes, and Emergency Management Coordinator, Daniel Fox.

During this tabletop, agencies worked together through a series of modules based on a pandemic influenza scenario. The exercise primarily focused on the access/functional needs populations, and how the Alexander County Health Department would reach these individuals during a pandemic influenza. The goal of this exercise was to test and improve current plans and policies in place.

We had representation from Alexander County Sheriff's Office, WPCOG Area Agency on Aging, Alexander County Government PIO, Alexander County Senior Center, Alexander County Fire Marshal's Office, Alexander County EMS/PORT, Alexander County Emergency Management, Alexander County Hospice, Alexander County Schools, and a variety of representatives from other local health departments. Thank you to all who participated!

Showcasing Staff Expertise! This month on “Getting to Know…” we heard from our Women, Infants, Children (WIC) Program.

Our dedicated WIC team members shared the work they do every day to ensure families have the tools, education, and encouragement they need to thrive. They answered staff questions about guiding first-time moms through breastfeeding to helping families make nutritious food choices on a budget. These ladies are trusted partners in some of life’s most important moments, and we are fortunate to have them on our team!

WIC staff includes: Breast Feeding Peer-Counselor, Angela Cruz; Public Health Nurse (PHN) II, Jennifer Little; WIC Director, April Marlowe; and not pictured, Finley Keyes, PHN II.

Heart disease is costly. The cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity from heart disease amounted to $417.9 billion between 2020 and 2021. Having a healthy plan with a variety of foods, keeping a healthy weight, and not smoking can help keep your blood pressure in a healthy range, which lowers your risk for heart disease and stroke.
