High-functioning addiction is not a contradiction.
It is extremely common and most high-functioning addicts don’t recognize themselves as such precisely because the usual markers of "hitting bottom" are not present.
The career is intact. The family has not visibly fractured. The finances are managed. So the internal conversation becomes: things would have to be worse before this counts as a problem.
But the internal experience tells a different story. The mental energy required to manage the use while maintaining the appearance of control is enormous. Relationships are being held at a careful distance. Emotions that cannot be processed sober are being deferred indefinitely. A slow erosion is underway that the calendar and the paycheck cannot measure.
If you are someone who has used your functionality as evidence that everything is fine, it may be worth asking what the functioning is costing you beneath the surface.
