Have you been confused about all of the information out there about lymphatic therapy? It’s so hard to know what is true and what’s not. And honestly, it’s the wild, wild west out there so I completely understand your confusion! I’ve seen great advice, grounded in science and experience. I’ve also seen advice that made me cringe and pray that people would run the other way.
Whether you are recovering from surgery (cosmetic, knee replacement, or any other type) or are looking for lymphatic therapy for other health reasons (autoimmune disorders, lymphedema, general health) here are some things you need to know.
You need a Certified/Licensed Massage Therapist that is also Certified in MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage). I say this because out here in the wild west, there are a lot of people claiming to do lymphatic therapy that are not certified and there is no one that regulates that (crazy, right?).
If you are post-surgery, your therapist should also be certified in post-surgery MLD. This is a whole other specialty that requires knowledge of where to redirect fluid after the lymphatic vessels have been compromised.
True MLD should never be painful. It is extremely gentle, rhythmic, and intentional (you’ll probably fall asleep!). If someone had told you otherwise, they did not experience true lymphatic therapy.
There are a lot of teas, supplements, and devices out there which will probably not hurt you, but may hurt your wallet. There is no substitute for the benefits of lymphatic therapy (and if you’ve experienced it, you already know this!)
I also want to clarify something. You’ll often hear me intertwine the words “lymphatic massage” even though MLD is not considered “massage”. This is intentional on my part because as we aim to get the message across about true lymphatic therapy, there are still beautiful people like yourself searching for “lymphatic massage”. I want to always do my best to make sure I’m reaching everyone I can that is seeking true lymphatic therapy out there.
I'd love to hear your thoughts ⬇️
