Don't worry, I got you.

First of all, I know those beautiful "before and after" pictures can be deceiving because they don't show the entire journey. And even though you know it's going to take some time to heal, those images are still stuck in your head and can create unrealistic expectations.

So is it "normal" to still be experiencing swelling 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 months after your procedure? YES! When your surgeon created the incision for the tummy tuck, they had to cut through lymphatic vessels which are close to the surface of the skin. Your lymphatic system regulates fluid within your body. When those vessels are severed through trauma, like surgery, it's like an accident on the freeway. Everything just stops. This is why after a tummy tuck, I have to "redirect traffic" to another offramp, so to speak. This allows that excess fluid to take a different route to be processed back into your blood stream so that it can be eliminated though the kidneys, liver and intestines (and it's why you have to p*e a lot after lymphatic massage!).

As you continue to heal, those lymphatic vessels begin to grow back, but it takes time. And if there is excessive scar tissue, that can also "slow down traffic" and prevent proper drainage. You'll probably notice that your swelling feels more prominent at the end of the day and that, my friend, is because of gravity which draws everything down. Since your lymphatic vessels are still building new drainage pathways, there is not that smooth flow.

So what can you do to help?

-Massage your incision
-Move your body
-Avoid sitting for long periods
-Drink plenty of water
-Eat whole, non-processed foods
-Schedule lymphatic massage at least once a month to support your body's natural healing process

And don't worry, this will get better! Complete healing usually takes about a year.
