Carrying your baby for nine months, the surgery, scar tissue from the surgery, abdominal weakness, postpartum posture, and impaired intra-abdominal pressure management can all contribute to poor pelvic floor muscle strength and function.

If you’re experiencing pain, pelvic pressure, leakage, or back pain, contact Empowered Women’s Health for pelvic floor physical therapy.

The cat-cow stretch is a great way to improve back pain, pelvic pain, and abdominal pain during pregnancy and postpartum. It mobilizes your spine, the muscles and fascia in your abdominal region, and your pelvic floor muscles!

To do the stretch, place your hands and knees on the floor underneath your hips and shoulders. Inhale as you press your chest downward, your sit bones upward and relax your pelvic floor muscles. Then exhale as you round your back, tuck your tailbone under, and pull your p***c bone toward your belly button. Release your head to the floor but don’t force your chin to your chest. Perform 10-20 repetitions daily. Move slowly through the motion. Try to feel every level of your spine moving.
