February is Age Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss for people ages 60 and older.
AMD is characterized by a loss of central vision due to damage to the retina. Although there is currently no cure available for this disease, advancements in treatment options for AMD are allowing for more patients to save their vision. Early detection is crucial when it comes to diagnosing, treating and managing AMD.
Risk factors include; age, family history, history of smoking, high cholesterol, lack of vitamins found in a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables.
