Addiction affects the brain, including decision-making and self-control.
It is influenced by genetics, environment, and access to substances, not moral weakness.
Even substances marketed as “natural,” including kratom, can lead to dependency and withdrawal.
When we treat addiction as a health condition instead of a character flaw, we create space for real healing.
If you or someone you love is struggling, you are not alone, and support is available.

As Temecula addressed kratom at the city level, we want to remember why these conversations matter.
Behind every policy discussion are real people, real families, and real recovery journeys. Many individuals never expected kratom to lead to dependency, withdrawal, or the need for treatment, yet that’s what we’ve seen firsthand.
Awareness, education, and compassion are key to protecting our community and supporting recovery.
If you or someone you love is struggling, help is available.

Addiction is not a moral failure or a lack of willpower.
It’s a recognized medical condition influenced by genetics, environment, and brain chemistry, and it requires proper treatment, not shame.

Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Kielee was only 23 when her life ended in Idaho Falls in Bonneville County. Her cause of death was acute mitragynine intoxication. She is one of six people in this county who have died in the past eighteen months from kr@tom related overdoses. Four of those deaths were caused by k ratom alone. Kielee is one of those four.

This county now reports that kr@tom is responsible for 18% of its overdose deaths. That number is staggering for any community. It becomes even heavier when you remember that behind every number is a family and a story. Kielee was not a statistic. She was a daughter and a sister with a warm spirit and a future she was trying to build. She lived with EDS and POTS and she turned to k ratom because she wanted relief from pain and exhaustion. She wanted a chance to feel normal and keep moving forward.

She trusted something that was sold as natural and harmless. The packaging looked safe. The marketing sounded reassuring. None of it warned her that she could lose her life. The k ratom industry preys on people who are vulnerable and searching for help. Kielee was one of them.

Her death also raises a question that weighs on every family who has faced this. Most coroners do not run extended toxicity tests. Without those tests the real cause of death can go unnoticed. We wonder how many families never learned the truth about what happened to their loved ones.

This page exists because Kielee mattered. It exists to show what happens when an unregulated product is allowed to spread unchecked. It exists so no other family has to stand where ours stands now. Kielee deserved protection. She deserved honest information. Every person in pain deserves the same.

Temecula City Council took action regarding kratom, and we’re grateful to see this issue being taken seriously.

Kratom is often misunderstood because it’s marketed as “natural” or harmless. But what we see in treatment tells a different story. We’ve worked with individuals and families who were deeply impacted by kratom dependency, many of whom never expected it to become a problem.

Kratom use has been associated with dependency and withdrawal, opioid-like effects, mood changes, and medical complications that can require detox-level care. This conversation matters because it directly affects real people in our community.

If you or someone you love is struggling, you don’t have to do it alone. Support is available.
