RECOGNIZED & UNRECOGNIZED HAZARDS

Recognizing hazards is very important for our safety in not only the workplace but in our everyday lives.
Some hazards may not appear as obvious as others and can create a larger risk for us.

When we get too comfortable with our jobs we are more likely to become complacent and try to cut corners to save time.
When trying to save time, we end up missing the hazards that can harm us.

Remember to take a step back, recognize the hazards, create a plan and follow that plan.

CLOTHING AND SAFETY🦺

Clothing is not usually thought about when it comes to safety, but it has a big impact on how productive your work day is.

Climate- wearing clothing depending on the weather and climate you’re working in.
Loose-fitting and light colored clothing in the summer/heat.
Thicker clothing and layers for the colder climates.
Being prepared for cooler morning and warmer days by dressing appropriately.

Being cautious of loose clothing around machinery or the potential of being caught on objects.

Bringing extra clothing in the event of working with chemicals or liquid that could get your clothing wet.

Be comfortable, dress appropriately for the type of job your preforming, the weather and along safety guidelines.

July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month!

As the weather starts to heat up, we become more vulnerable as our defenses lower. We leave our windows rolled down, keys in the car to let a A/C cool down the interior and after a long day at the beach we end up leaving our valuables in the car… making that vehicle a target.

In the U.S., a vehicle is stolen every 45 seconds.
That is over 700,000 cars a year and over $6 billion in motor vehicle value.

Here are some tips to help you prevent being targeted!

National Safety Month
Hazard Recognition
June 25th-30th

Hierarchy of controls is important for working towards eliminating occupational hazards and risks, designing workplaces and procedures and prevention methods. A way of determining which actions will best control identified exposures. The hierarchy of controls perceived to be most effective and moves down to those deemed least effective.
ELIMINATION-
Removing hazard from the workplace. (i.e. purchasing equipment that is not noisy, perform tasks at ground level rather than working at heights)
SUBSTITUTION-
Substituting or replacing a hazardous item or activity with something less hazardous.
(i.e. use a non-silica abrasive material instead of sandblasting)
ENGINEERING CONTROLS-
Designing purposeful solutions that physically separate employees from hazards.
(i.e. place barriers around loud machinery, fence around dangerous equipment, install guardrails around elevated worksites)
ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS-
Implementing changes to the way employees work and perform particular processes.
(i.e. install signs, labels and alarms, create written formalized operating procedures)
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT-
Worn or used by employees while they perform their work.
TIPS FOR THE “SAFETY COP”
Workers may have the intention to safely get the job done and follow the policies and procedures to do so, but sometimes schedules can cause workers to feel rushed and end up taking short cuts. Engaging in a respectful dialogue and helping them understand that these policies are in place to safely get them home each day can help build a rapport.
Asking questions like: “What if something happened here? How would your loved ones be affected? How would an injury affect what you like to do off the job?”

BE ALERT:
Watch where you’re going!
‼️Don’t cross the street while on a electronic device
‼️scan ahead for cracks and uneven pavement that could cause trips

Watch for hazards you can’t see!
‼️Avoid repetitive motions
‼️Get 7-9 hours of sleep each day

Take safety with you!
‼️Keep in mind that hazards don’t just happen in the workplace but can be in every aspect of life. Stay alert and be safe!

Heat was the 2nd leading cause of weather-related death in 2021 with 201 deaths, behind winter weather at 209 deaths.

Hydration:
💧If you’re thirsty, you’re already behind on fluid replacement.
💧energy drinks and sports drinks have a lot of sugar, and they may raise your caffeine levels so high it affects your heart.

Preparedness:
🦺Workers must be provided water, scheduled breaks for rest, and a shaded area to cool down and recover if they are exposed to outdoor conditions.
🦺These plans should be tailored to your company’s specific work environment and crew size.
🦺Make sure workers take the risk seriously. As temperatures rise, the body releases heat more slowly. As humidity increases, sweat evaporation decreases, while stagnant air makes sweat evaporation more difficult.
🦺An effective heat acclimatization program gradually increases worker exposure to heat over a 7- to 14-day period.

UV Index:
☀️Protective clothing; wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts. Hats are especially important for people with thinning hair.
☀️The sun is most intense roughly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (and especially close to noon).

What to do in heat emergency:
‼️Uncontrolled heat exhaustion can evolve into heat stroke, so make sure to treat victims quickly:
‼️Move victims to a shaded or air-conditioned area
‼️Give water or other cool, nonalcoholic beverages
‼️Apply wet towels, or have victims take a cool shower

Seek medical help immediately if someone is suffering from heat stroke.
DO:
‼️Call 911
‼️Move the victim to a cool place
‼️Remove unnecessary clothing
‼️Immediately cool the victim, preferably by immersing up to the neck in cold water
‼️If immersion in cold water is not possible, place the victim in a cold shower or move to a cool area and cover as much of the body as possible with cold, wet towels
‼️Keep cooling until body temperature drops to 101 degrees
‼️Monitor the victim's breathing and be ready to give CPR if needed
DO NOT:
‼️Force the victim to drink liquids
‼️Apply rubbing alcohol to the skin
‼️Allow victims to take pain relievers or salt tablets

June is National Safety Month! This weeks focus is on slips, trips and falls.

Slips, trips and falls account for 1/3 of all personal injuries in the workplace, and they’re the top cause of all workers’ compensation claims. Injuries incurred include head, back and neck injuries, broken bones, cuts, sprains and pulled muscles.

Each year in the U.S., more than 100 people die and thousands more are injured from ladder-related falls. In 2020, there were 161 fatal work injuries from which ladders were the primary source.

Here are 7 tips to help you with your ladder safety.
