How To Prep For Your Laser Tattoo Removal Session

Your skin’s condition and your overall health play a big role in how well your tattoo fades. Here's how to set yourself up for the best results.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Your lymphatic system flushes out the broken ink particles and it works best when you’re well-hydrated. Start drinking extra water at least 24–48 hours before your session.

2. Avoid sun exposure & tanning.
The treatment area should be free of sunburn and tanning (natural or artificial). Keep the area covered and wear SPF in the weeks leading up.

3. Shave the area (if needed).
If your tattoo is in a hairy area, gently shave the night before but avoid irritation.

4. Come in with clean skin.
No lotions, oils, makeup, deodorant, or self-tanners on the tattoo. We need a clean, dry surface to treat safely.

5. Eat beforehand.
Don’t come on an empty stomach! A light meal helps stabilize your blood sugar and keeps you feeling good during your session.

6. Skip alcohol & ibuprofen.
Avoid blood thinners like alcohol or NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) 24 hours before your appointment, as they can increase bruising or sensitivity.

The better you prep, the better your skin responds, and the more effective each session will be.

When it comes to laser tattoo removal, location matters.

Laser breaks up the ink, but it’s your immune system that does the heavy lifting, carrying shattered pigment away through your lymphatic system. Areas with strong circulation (like the chest, back, and upper arms) clear ink faster.

Tattoos on hands, wrists, ankles, and feet are further from the heart, where blood flow is slower, lymphatic drainage is weaker, and gravity works against you. This means ink sits longer, and removal takes more sessions.

Your body can clear the ink, but it may need more time to do its job.

Movement, hydration, and spacing sessions properly can all support the fading process.

There's a reason why most cosmetic tattoos (like brows) shift to red, orange, or yellow after laser. Most cosmetic pigments contain titanium dioxide or iron oxide. Both react differently to laser energy than traditional tattoo ink:

Iron Oxide: When exposed to laser, it can oxidize, revealing a red, rust-like hue underneath.

Titanium Dioxide: This white pigment doesn't absorb laser energy well, and as surrounding pigments fade, it can leave behind a yellowish or pale residue.

This color shift is a normal and expected part of the removal process for brows done with permanent makeup (PMU) pigments.

With proper technique and patience, we can continue treating safely and effectively. Not all lasers are equipped to handle these pigments. Always choose a provider who understands the science behind PMU removal.
