Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed For our Independence and Freedom. In light of recent events the Tempe ADHS would like to take the time to thank all of those who have served in our armed forces and local first responders who put their lives on the line every day to keep us free and safe.

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots Crew who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting those they love and their community.

What is sensory therapy?

Sensory therapy can help people become more accustomed to their senses, which can help them perform everyday tasks with greater ease. It is categorized by the senses:
• Olfactory (sense of smell)
• Visual (sense of eyesight)
• Auditory (sense of hearing)
• Tactile (sense of touch)
• Gustatory (sense of taste)
Sensory therapy also deals with:
• Body awareness - a persons' sense of physical self- awareness
• Balance - A persons' sense of balance provided by the inner ear and brain
Sensory therapy is a type of therapy developed for older adults and people with disabilities. Some older adults and people with disabilities have one or more of their senses that are over or under sensitive to stimulation. This can cause difficulties in their everyday living.

Generally older adults experience 'hypo-sensitivity' - this means they may have trouble hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting; due to the dulling of their senses. Therefore the older adults usually need sensory therapy products that stimulate or 'exercise' the senses

In your home
For many older adults verbal communication can be difficult and can lead to people becoming withdrawn. Sensory activities are one way of trying to engage with people who have withdrawn and can open up communication routes. Sensory products may also be useful for those who in later stages of life.
Sensory stimulation for adults with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia has been shown to decrease agitation and restlessness, as well as improve sleep. These symptoms are very common in most forms of dementia, and certainly in people with Alzheimer's, so sensory stimulation translates as improved quality of life for the patient as well as for their loved one.

Therapy Dogs elicit responses from some our participants who are typically withdrawn and limited in their abilities. The introduction of pet therapy increases interaction among individuals and promotes a positive change in self-esteem – it is hard not to smile when you are petting such amazing animals! The Tempe ADHS participants (and staff) have come to love our new friends – Zaja, a 2 year old Labra Doodle and Spencer, a Golden Retriever

Throughout the month of February the Senior participants at Tempe ADHS made conversational hearts. Today, with a little help, we surprised the young adults at Tempe by "heart attacking" their program before they arrived. We left a path of hearts from the driveway through the front door, then we placed hearts all over the entrance, on walls, doors, tables, chairs, on bathroom mirrors, the TV, and in hidden places like inside the fridge. The Young Adults LOVED it! Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
