Happy Wellness Wednesday, family!
It's Toya Danielle Yarbrough, LPN MOL, owner of Tricky Royalty, and I want to talk about something I get asked about all the time: protein powders.
Let me be real with you - protein powder isn't for everyone, and it's definitely not a magic solution. But for some people, it can be a helpful tool in their wellness journey.
So who actually needs protein powder? I'm talking about folks who are dealing with malnutrition and struggling to get enough protein through regular meals. Athletes and gym enthusiasts who are actively building muscle and need that extra support. And yes, people recovering from surgery or healing from wounds - protein is crucial for tissue repair and recovery.
Here's my biggest caution though, and please hear me on this: if you're taking any medications, you need to check with your healthcare practitioner before adding protein powder to your routine. Some supplements can interact with medications in ways you might not expect, and your safety comes first.
Not everyone needs supplementation. If you're eating a balanced diet with adequate protein sources throughout the day, you might be just fine without it. But if you fall into one of those categories I mentioned, or you're genuinely struggling to meet your protein needs, it might be worth having that conversation with your provider.
Your health journey is personal, and what works for someone else might not be what you need. Always advocate for yourself and ask questions.
