35 years of access. 35 years of progress.

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law—and the road to independence changed forever.

From curb cuts to driving evaluations, from hand controls to accessible transit—mobility looks different because of this landmark legislation. And yet, the journey isn’t over.

We're honoring the 35th anniversary of the ADA by reflecting on how it transformed access to driving—and where we still need to go.

Is driving a right—or a privilege?
For many people with disabilities, the answer isn’t so simple.

Before the first lesson… before the adaptive equipment… there’s a bigger question: Will I even get the chance?

Mobility is about more than transportation. It’s about opportunity, dignity, and having the freedom to move through the world on your own terms.

In our latest blog, we explore how the ADA reshaped access to mobility—and why the road ahead still needs paving.

Let’s keep pushing for a world where mobility isn’t conditional—because everyone deserves a fair shot at the road ahead.

There’s a lot of freedom that comes with getting behind the wheel—but for many people with disabilities, that path to driving independence is often clouded by myths, assumptions, or outright misinformation.
Truth is: millions of disabled drivers are on the road every day. They’re using adaptive equipment, personalized training, and a whole lot of determination to drive safely and confidently on their terms.
But outdated beliefs still get in the way. Maybe someone said, “You probably won’t be able to drive.” Or, “That equipment must be complicated.” Or even, “It’s just too expensive.”
These comments can discourage someone from even exploring what’s possible.
So let’s change the narrative.
In our latest post, we’re breaking down five common myths that surround driving with a disability—so we can replace confusion with clarity.
Swipe through to learn the facts, then tap the link in bio to go deeper.
Let’s keep making space for more freedom—and more drivers doing it their way.

Next up in our Adaptive Equipment Spotlight series: the Smart Lifter by Mobility Innovations.

If lifting a heavy wheelchair or scooter into your car feels overwhelming—or just physically exhausting—this could be a game changer. The Smart Lifter is a discreet hoist system that installs inside your vehicle and helps lift and stow your mobility device with the push of a button.

There are different models available to suit various weights and vehicle types, so it’s not one-size-fits-all—it’s about finding the right fit for your needs. Whether you’re driving or along for the ride, this kind of equipment can make it easier to keep your routine, stay active, or say “yes” to last-minute plans—without having to depend on someone else to do the lifting.

Sometimes, independence looks like a small button that takes one big task off your plate.

Driving independence is evolving—and the GenX touchscreen interface by Electronic Mobility Controls (EMC) is part of that shift.

Designed to work seamlessly with the AEVIT 2.0 system, GenX offers fast response times, clear high-resolution graphics, and a user-friendly layout. It serves as the main control interface for individuals with physical disabilities, allowing drivers to manage vehicle functions like steering, braking, acceleration, and secondary controls (lights, wipers, etc.) through a customizable touchscreen. It's an upgrade in both form and function—making adaptive driving more intuitive and accessible.

If you're exploring what's possible with adaptive tech, this is one system worth knowing about.
