The Granny Nannies Story

Granny NANNIES was founded in 1990 by Rob and Kirsten Hodgson in Central Florida as the result of a very personal, family situation - the need to find quality, trustworthy, reliable and affordable senior home care for Rob's aging grandmother, Esther Dowding, in her own Winter Park home. The plight was similar to others across the country: an elderly parent with working adult children, who are parents themselves; a great-grandparent with a zest for life and a disabling physical condition; a senior with an undeniable need for homecare assistance doing everyday activities, yet with a determined desire to stay in their own home; or loved ones to whom a nursing home is "out of the question." Rob and Kirsten Hodgson moved to Florida from New Hampshire to care for Esther. With their own life to manage, Rob and Kirsten knew they needed help in caring for Esther and began a search to find competent, caring, affordable assistance. Their search turned up very little. In fact, there was a relative void in Central Florida for the type of home care services they sought. Clearly, a resource was needed. Being "go-getters," Rob and Kirsten solved the problem for themselves and hundreds of other families by establishing Granny NANNIES of North America to offer specialized private duty home care services for the elderly. And the rest is history! Since our beginnings in 1990, Granny NANNIES' commitment to excellence remains true today. A strong dedication remains to ensure that our clients are consistently treated with the highest level of respect and dignity and are matched with the right private duty caregiver to provide care services in the home, hospital, assisted living facility, or nursing home. Esther, who lived to the age of 104, credited her longevity and well-being to Granny NANNIES. "She's the reason we started it all!" Says her grandson Rob, giving credit where credit is due.

In the realm of healthcare, continuity of care stands as a cornerstone of effective treatment and patient satisfaction. At Granny NANNIES, we’ve consistently heard from clients about the invaluable benefits of having a regular caregiver. Beyond just providing comfort and familiarity, continuity of care plays a crucial role in early problem recognition and optimal chronic disease management.

Recognizing Small Problems Before They Become Big Issues
One of the most significant advantages of continuity of care is the ability to detect subtle changes in a patient’s health or behavior early on. Unlike sporadic visits from different caregivers, a consistent caregiver develops a deep understanding of their patient’s baseline health. This familiarity allows them to notice deviations that might indicate the onset of a health issue. For instance, a caregiver who notices slight changes in an elderly patient’s energy levels or appetite can prompt earlier intervention, potentially preventing more serious complications down the road.
Optimizing Chronic Disease Management
For individuals managing chronic conditions, continuity of care is particularly beneficial. Patients with conditions like diabetes or hypertension often require ongoing monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans. A regular caregiver who understands the nuances of a patient’s condition and history can make more informed decisions about their care. This includes recognizing trends in health metrics, adhering to prescribed medications, and providing timely lifestyle advice—all of which contribute to better disease management outcomes.
Building Trust and Confidence
Beyond the clinical benefits, continuity of care fosters a trusting relationship between caregivers and patients. Over time, patients develop confidence in their caregiver’s ability to provide personalized care that considers their unique needs and preferences. This trust is crucial in encouraging patients to communicate openly about their health concerns, leading to more effective care delivery and improved patient satisfaction.

Is my forgetfulness normal?
What's normal when it comes to being forgetful What’s considered normal when it comes to forgetfulness? Truth time: Have you gone to the pantry and forgotten what you were looking for? Do you struggle with remembering your new neighbors’ names? After you talk to someone about Alzheimer’s, do you privately wonder if you are heading down that slippery slope? There’s something about talking about Alzheimer’s that makes us question our own memory capabilities and how sharp we still are. The good news is that forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, and whether we like it or not, we are all getting older each day. The key is determining the difference between mild forgetfulness and a serious memory problem that may indicate Alzheimer’s. Here’s some help distinguishing the two paths, with help from the National Institute on Aging:

Normal brain aging means occasional poor decision making; missing a monthly bill payment; struggling to find the right word; misplacing or losing things once in a while.

Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease are: Frequently making poor decisions and judgments; problems managing monthly bill payments; losing awareness of the day, month, year, time of day; difficulty conversing; often misplacing objects and not being able to find them.

The essential lesson here is this: If you have concerns about your memory slipping or changing, talk to your primary health care provider.

Journaling is an excellent way to calm your mind, focus on yourself, taking the time to connect, pause and listen to what your own needs/thoughts and feelings are.

You don’t have to be a good writer (or even a good speller) to get something out of the practice of journaling. All you need is a pen and paper or a blank document on your screen and you can get started.

Journaling is an incredibly beneficial self-care technique, which doesn’t just enhance feelings of happiness, but reduces stress, clarifies thoughts and feelings, and ultimately helps you get to know yourself better.

Here are some of the benefits of regularly journaling.

-Stress Relief Studies have shown that emotion-based journaling has been linked to both decreased mental distress and increased well-being. Taking some time to slow down after a busy day and reflect is a great way to cultivate gratefulness and perspective in your mind. After writing them down, you’ll have a better opportunity to view your stressors in a more detached, objective way. This allows you to brainstorm solutions rather than just stay mired in the stress.

-Improved Memory Journaling can free up your cognitive resources to focus on more important things than your stressors. Writing about your thoughts and feelings or even just the events of the day can allow your brain to better contextualize those events and allows your brain to retain them better. Something as simple as recapping the major events of a week so you can revisit them will allow you to remember them much better (and provides you a hard copy even if you don’t)

-Trauma Coping Journaling is one of the most common tools used to help trauma victims cope and process what happened to them. A study done with people suffering from PTSD found that those who participated in expressive writing activities saw significant improvement in their moods and a reduction in their stress hormones.

-Anxiety Reduction Journaling is a great way to calm an anxious mind and allow you to regain your peace. A study showed that even 15-20 minutes of journaling a day had significant effects on the brain including decreased anxiety and an overall increase in well-being. Mindful habits like journaling are a great way to calm the mind and relieve tension in the body.

Caregiving demands a lot of energy. This is a reminder that running on empty, which seems to be a modern epidemic is not healthy.

The solution is as simple as realizing that self-time is just as real of a need as food or sleep, and we should honor that need by allowing ourselves to relax in our brief moments of solitude.

Often, we'll have to consciously carve out those moments, and they may be brief, but the rewards will be worth it.

Chronic pain not only affects the body, but it also affects emotions, relationships, and the mind. It can cause anxiety and depression, which can worsen the pain.

These tips can help you cope with the changes accompanying growing older and live life to the fullest.

-Exercise – while it may seem counterintuitive, movement helps reduce pain, try walking every day.
-Positive thoughts – watch a funny movie, listen to music, talk to a friend.
-Relax/Rest – adequate sleep can help you stay positive
-Eat healthy – taking care of yourself gives you a feeling of control and independence.

Put simply, a puzzle poses a problem to be solved. The problem-solving process is a cognitive exercise –Puzzles do have therapeutic value!

Simple puzzles open the door for reminiscing and discussing fond memories, in addition to having a good sense of accomplishment when the last piece is placed.

Each person will be at a different level of cognitive decline, so you want to choose one that best fits with your senior loved ones’ abilities. You want to challenge the person without making the puzzle too difficult to complete. Low piece counts and age-appropriate image puzzles ranging from 12 to 100 pieces may work best. Choose puzzles that have nostalgic designs and vibrant contrasting colors that make them a joy for seniors with cognitive decline.

If someone special to you was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, do not ignore the potential benefits of puzzles. Whether your loved one was a puzzle person before or not, you should encourage them to make puzzles a more significant part of their life.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia requires a person-centered approach that is specific to the needs of your loved ones. Whether at home or in a memory care facility, professional caregivers can provide your loved one with the ongoing support they need and can act in a partnership capacity with the care facility and the family.
