117 baby boys die every year from complications of circumcision, and that’s not speaking to the number of newborns for develop serious, life-changing complications. It needs to be more widely understood that this is a risk.

The winter months are when RSV is commonly seen. I hope all families with small babies avoid this condition, because “unpleasant” doesn’t begin to describe it. Breastfeeding helps to avoid RSV, but it isn’t a full preventative. Breastfeed to give immunities to you baby, but do all you can to avoid exposure to this disease.

Breastfeeding during the holidays has unique challenges. Families being off from their normal routines, new foods, possibly unfamiliar relatives interacting with baby, and maybe even some holiday celebrants not respecting parenting decisions and actively sabotaging your feeding plans all may play a role.

New research shows that antibiotics given prior to cesarean surgery to prevent infection somewhat impacts newborns' microbiomes, but breastfeeding versus formula feeding in the early weeks after cesarean delivery has a significantly greater effect.
