Our April Champion at Work recipient is David Ochieng, RN. Originally from Kenya, David started his mental health career over three years ago. He stated he originally wanted to begin a career in anesthesiology, but a mentor inspired him to pursue mental health. He then became a nurse and has been a part of the Canyon Creek team for the past year.

David says his favorite part of the job is providing exceptional care to patients to help them get back to being the best version of themselves. His peers describe him as always having a positive attitude, even during the worst storms. Whether he is calming a patient in crisis, supporting a coworker or going above and beyond to ensure safety and recovery, David makes a real difference in our hospital every single day.

Thank you, David, for your unwavering commitment to our patients and for being such a positive member of our Canyon Creek team!

Thank you to Juliethe Leon for inviting us to the Texas Association for Truancy and Dropout Prevention 2026 Spring Conference. We appreciated the opportunity to share information about Canyon Creek services and discuss how mental health can affect students’ daily lives.

At Canyon Creek, we recognize that truancy is often a sign of deeper challenges. Through individualized therapy, family engagement and skill‑building, we support students ages 13 to 17 as they navigate anxiety, depression, trauma and other barriers that can impact school attendance.
