Perinatal hepatitis C refers to the transmission of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) from a pregnant person to their baby during pregnancy or at the time of birth. Here are some facts:

🦠 Hepatitis C is a viral infection that affects the liver.
👶 Perinatal transmission happens in about 5–6% of cases when a pregnant person with HCV gives birth.
🤱 Transmission usually occurs during delivery, not through breastfeeding.
🧪 Babies born to HCV-positive mothers are monitored and tested, typically after 18 months of age.
💉 There’s no approved treatment during pregnancy, but effective antiviral treatments exist for adults and can be given before pregnancy or after delivery.

Early detection and follow-up are essential to manage potential liver damage in children and to prevent further spread of the virus.
