Andre Van Mol, MD Review

Dr. Julie Hamilton’s “Counseling Gender Dysphoric Children and Teenagers” is the finest instructional video I have yet seen on the topic! Dr. Hamilton, past president of Alliance for Therapeutic Choice and Scientific Integrity, brings her decades of counseling experience to this profoundly timely, important, and challenging topic. Julie boldly goes straight to two of the leading figures in the field, psychologist Ken Zucker and psychiatrist Susan Bradley, for their insights. This project communicates clear principles, compelling personal testimonies, and a remarkably practical and active psychotherapeutic approach to the problem. It is all so exceptionally well done!

Dr. Hamilton’s video addresses contributing factors to gender dysphoria (personality, perceptions and misperceptions, parent-child relationships, peer relationships, family psychodynamics, and contributors to rapid-onset gender dysphoria), relevant general counseling priorities (working with both parent and the child/teen, sensitivity and misperceptions, autism, parent-child relationships, the 4 As of parenting, advancing peer relationships, and attending to family psychodynamics), and specific counseling considerations in rapid-onset gender dysphoria. Christian clients and families will appreciate the closing section on a Biblical world view, finding our identity in Christ, the Holy Spirit’s equipping of believers to live out God’s design for us (and to meet the difficulties inherent in that), the primacy of scripture, and more.
