In 1994 I had the privilege of playing on the inaugural Lotus World Music Festival with Marcos Cavalcante's Choro group. This Saturday, I get the honor of playing with another Brazilian Choro group, Choro Das Tres along with Solly Burton.
Choro music is urban folk music of Brazil - contemporary to American Ragtime and Dixieland styles... which originated in Rio de Janeiro.
This Saturday, the THSO will present “Brazilian Nights” featuring the Choro Das 3, but how much do you know about this wonderful trio? Read below to learn their journey!
This fabulous all-female Brazilian trio, currently on their eighth American tour, will be in Terre Haute for a one-night-only stop! Choro das 3 features sisters Corina (flute), Lia (7 string guitar) and Elisa (mandolin, clarinet, banjo, accordion and piano). Tragically, Eduardo, the sisters’ father, lost his life to Covid early in the pandemic before vaccines were available in Brazil. Eduardo was the band’s percussionist and played pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine). The trio's mother, Cristina, stepped in as the band manager after Eduardo’s passing. The sisters continue to dedicate every performance to their father’s memory.
The group has released 11 albums and have been touring in North America, Europe and Brazil for the past 21 years. The trio plays Brazilian instrumental music based on choro, an instrumental music genre that emerged in Brazil in the 19th century which became the foundation of all Brazilian music (think “Girl from Ipanema”). The group started their current tour of the United States in May 2023. Terre Haute is the last stop on their tour! “This is an extraordinary opportunity to hear stunning virtuoso Brazilian stars,” notes Dr. David Bowden, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Terre Haute Symphony. “You don’t want to miss them.”
Don’t miss your chance to experience authentic Brazilian music right here in Terre Haute! Patrons can purchase concert tickets by visiting www.thso.org or calling (812) 242-8476. We hope to see you there!
