Grateful for the group that left this little Jesus on our doorstep today as it gives me a chance to address a BIG question we get from time⦠āIs yoga a religion?ā
The truth is that this Is a complex question with no straight forward answer. No easy way to wrap it up in a neat little box with a pretty little bow.
I know the answer that is typically given in the west bypasses much of the rich history of yoga. So i went out in search of the best explaination I could find to give you as comprehensive an answer one could expect with in a single article. I appreciate how this article includes many view points from practitiners in the west as well as yoga scholars. Over my 20+ years practicing yoga and hundreds of hours in study I agree with this authors conclusion below and encourage you to read the whole article if it Is of interest or concern to you. Letās have the conversationš«¶š½
āToday when I teach, I acknowledge that yoga is āa vast and ancient tree with many roots and branches,ā as religious scholar Mark Singleton has described it. In North America, most of us experience it as a secular practice influenced by South Asia, with its lyrical Sanskrit terms and its common-sense Eight Limbs philosophy.
I tend to follow Barkatakiās suggestion and approach yoga as a philosophy or mythology. āItās a worldview, itās an ethical philosophy, itās a technology of personal development,ā she says. āBut in the context that weāre doing it, itās not a religion. Being respectful that, for some people, certainly, yoga is part of their religious practice, but thatās not what yoga was in its entirety. It never was just that.ā
And while Iām not a Sanatana Dharma expert, I encourage students to use the yamas and niyamas to guide their daily interactions. I urge them to explore pratyahara, dharana, and dhyana to help find focus and stay centered, because science and experience tell me these practices are helpful.
To borrow the beautiful explanation in Indu Aroraās YogaāAncient Heritage, Tomorrowās Vision, āYoga has as many meanings as there are people who ask this question. The answer to āWhat is yoga?ā is not limited to one personās definition or to a single text or interpretationā¦. Each person needs to experience the truth himself/herself and only then all the doubts will vanish.ā
