👣 Why Do Our Legs Swell as We Age?

Swollen legs aren’t just a “normal” part of aging, they’re a symptom. Here’s what’s actually happening:

🩸 1. Poor Circulation

As we age, our veins can become weaker or less efficient at pumping blood back to the heart, especially if we sit or stand for long periods. This causes fluid to pool in the lower legs, leading to swelling (aka edema).

❤️ 2. Weakened Heart Function

A less efficient cardiovascular system can cause blood to circulate more slowly. This increases pressure in the veins, pushing fluid into surrounding tissues.

🧂 3. Sodium & Fluid Retention

Many older adults unknowingly retain more sodium due to diet or medications, which pulls extra water into the bloodstream, and eventually into your legs.

🦵 4. Loss of Muscle Mass

Muscles help pump blood through your veins. Less movement and age-related muscle loss means less help getting blood and fluids back to your heart.

💊 5. Medications & Underlying Conditions

Common medications (for blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) can cause swelling, and conditions like kidney disease, liver issues, or lymphatic dysfunction make things worse.
