Dogs (and cats) have been excellent companions to humans for millenia. Science has proven that when we pet and play with our animal friends we lower stress hormones like cortisol and increase "feel-good" hormones such as oxytocin and serotonin.

Scars are visual storytelling on skin. They show that we have survived. Some scars are large and unable to be concealed, and some may be fine and intentionally hidden. Both are evidence of a life-changing situation or tragedy. You made it through. You should not feel shame or judgment from society or from within.

In the comments, I have included a picture of the scar from the removal of a cranial meningocele I had at birth. In the past I always tried to hide it with hair, as I have been self-conscious. These days, I choose to accept it and wear my hair up now.
