Four bull elk broke through thin ice on a pond near Manhattan, Montana, becoming trapped in freezing water with no safe way out. After ground rescue attempts failed, a helicopter was brought in and used intentionally, not to land, but to apply controlled noise and rotor wash to push the elk toward thicker ice and open shoreline. Within minutes, all four animals were able to climb out under their own power and walk off unharmed. It’s an unusual rescue, but a legitimate wildlife management tool that relies on animal behavior rather than physical contact, and in this case it worked exactly as intended.
