Burn injuries can happen quickly – at home, outdoors or during everyday routines. This National Burn Awareness Week, we’re joining the American Burn Association in spotlighting this year’s theme: “Burn Prevention Where You Live, Work and Play – Preventing Burns in the Workplace.” While many burns occur in places like kitchens, workshops or industrial settings, prevention starts with awareness wherever you are. Mild, first‑degree burns – often marked by redness, pain or slight swelling – can typically be cared for at home using simple first-aid steps like gently cleaning the area with cool water and soap, applying a thin layer of ointment and covering with sterile, non‑stick gauze. Over‑the‑counter medication can help with discomfort. Follow the tips we’re sharing here on what to avoid when treating a burn.

For more serious burns, especially those involving deeper tissue or larger areas, prompt medical attention is critical. Emergency rooms are prepared to provide timely care. We recently cut the ribbon on our long-awaited progressive care unit, which will offer a new level of treatment for patients who trust us with their recovery.
Progressive care units (PCU), also known as step-down or intermediate care units, have the space and equipment for treating complex patients who may be recovering from a heart attack, stroke, or critical surgery. Patients on a PCU require more support than what is offered on a standard hospital unit. However, they are not as ill as patients being seen in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Our heart hospital team celebrated the 500th open heart surgery of 2025 with a successful coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure on Leonard Guretsky. The surgery — completed by our cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Hannan Chaugle — marked the first time the team has ever reached this incredible milestone. The final number of completed open heart surgeries for 2025 was 517, far surpassing the 2024 final number of 455.

The heart hospital, located directly across the street from the main hospital in Clear Lake, includes a six-story tower, cardiac catheterization labs, cardiovascular intensive care unit (ICU), dialysis unit, pharmacy and three operating rooms with technology that is not available anywhere else in the South Houston region. We're thrilled to announce our newest AirLife base in Hempstead!

“Our AirLife team worked diligently with the Waller County EMS Board, our aviation partner Apollo, and community stakeholders to plan and approve this new AirLife location,” said Jared Lee, regional assistant vice president for medical transportation. “In critical emergencies, minutes matter. This new base allows us to bring high-quality emergency care directly to rural communities and rapidly transport patients to Houston-area facilities equipped to meet their needs.”
