🌱 Have you wanted to learn more about plants and herbalism?

One of my favorite things that we did in my herbal apprenticeship with sacred vibes is a plant walk. Rose taught me so much about myself and I return to her whenever I need extra support.

Now I want to share that practice with you. Start the new year by joining me in this immersion!

🌺 we will commit to using clove every day for 30 days in any way shape or form.

We start Feb 1st.

Comment ‘Clove’ and I’ll send you the link 🍂

Can we chat, OFF the record? 😬 ⬇️

Imma be straight up... no one can guarantee safety. Even as someone who does their best to create SAFER spaces for folx, I am honest about the fact that I don't always get it right.

As a doula, one of the most common questions I get from my clients is who are the Q***r & Trans friendly providers?

While I do my best to vet everyone on my referral list and have suggestions, some people may still have a negative experience with those folx, especially if we take into account intersectionalities of identity. That's why it's important for me to compile people's experiences with different providers & folx can decide for themselves what feels right.

Here are some ways you can determine if your provider is Q***r & gender-affirming:
1. Intake forms are inclusive. The forms have a space for you to share your name (if different from the name on your documents), gender identity, & pronouns.

2. You are treated without judgment. Your provider does not make assumptions about your identity or situation. The receptionist doesn't seem surprised when they call a name & it's you. You feel like you have space to ask questions. Your provider refers to you by name & no one asks, where your "husband" is.

3. Last and most importantly, you can breathe in this space. You are not bracing yourself whenever you go in for appointments & maybe you even look forward to them.

If you are in NYC, who are some providers you have found to be Q***r & gender-affirming? Let's share them below so others may benefit! ⬇️

Hear what some of my clients have to say about me! M.G. chose me to be present with her in the OR during her Cesarean. I am thankful to have built that level of trust with her & that experience has allowed me to better prepare other clients for their Cesareans.

"Jen literally was connected to me at the last minute; a few short weeks ahead of my due date. Jen was reserved but reassuring as my due date approached. This was my 1st child and I wanted EVERYTHING to be perfect. As we all know… the last thing you can do is plan. Jen came to the hospital while I was in the early process of giving birth. She made sure I understood what the nurses and doctors were telling me and assured me that I didn’t have to do certain things and of the alternatives. I ended up going ahead with a C-section and I tear up as I think of it because she was in there with me and I couldn’t have chosen a better birth coach! She even captured personal pictures of when my daughter was born. I call her “Auntie Doula” and she will forever hold a very special place in my heart and little family. Thanks always Jen!"

The act of mothering is genderless 💚

In honor of Mother's Day, I want to highlight Motherwort. Many of us, as Q***r folx, have a complicated relationship with mothers & motherhood.

Motherwort is here to hold us through those complicated feelings. They make you feel held & mother you in the way that no one else can.

Great to use for:
☀️Transition into motherhood
☀️Grief surrounding pregnancy loss (infertility, abortion, miscarriage, etc.)
☀️Learning to mother yourself

The most profound effect that motherwort had on me was helping me accept the shortcomings of my own mother and understand how the relationships of my maternal lineage have affected us all.

Learning from plants is a slow unfolding, so I am still reflecting on all of her lessons. I hope that Motherwort brings you as much comfort as she brought me.

Check out my stories for the tale of how Motherwort & Rose brought me back to DR (my ancestral homelands) 🇩🇴.

*do NOT drink Motherwort if you are still pregnant.*

The goal is to minimize how much you have to think. One of the major symptoms postpartum is brain fog. All of your brain power goes to taking care of your baby. It seems silly to have to write down a list of where you order food from, what your favorite dishes are or even your usual grocery list but trust me, you will not remember!

Also, this makes it easier for your friends to support you.

When you set up your meal train, they now know, "okay, I am responsible for getting Jen dinner tonight. Let me order them that chicken burrito bowl they like from the Mexican place down the street".

If you have been stocking your freezer! Keep at it, you can do it. 👊🏽

Here's a tip for increasing your body literacy 👇

Take your own blood pressure at home!

May 1st marks Preeclampsia Awareness month. Preeclampsia is a life-threatening hypertensive disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

On the other side of things we can't talk about, high blood pressure without talking about "white coat syndrome" which disproportionately affects Black, Latinx, Q***r & Trans folx. Being at the doctor's office can be triggering so it's important to know if you ACTUALLY have high blood pressure or if it's an anomaly.

Becoming familiar with your body and pregnancy and its variations of normal can help you practice greater bodily autonomy and reclaim your medical care.

Check out:
's blood pressure tracker foundation for more info on preeclampsia (TW: uses gendered language)

1- Here's why you should take your own blood pressure in pregnancy
2- Is it preeclampsia or is it the doctor? "white coat syndrome" is a condition in which a person's blood pressure readings are higher when taken at the doctor's office compared to other settings
3- Preeclampsia is a life-threatening hypertensive disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period. If left untreated it can cause seizure, stroke and be life-threatening to the parent & child. So what should you do?
4- Take your blood pressure at home. By knowing what your baseline is, you have more information to make decisions around your care and can begin to identify trends. If your BP is persistently elevated, you may have preeclampsia. If it's only elevated at the doctor, this may be white coat syndrome.
5- Try these simple tips:
- Check your blood pressure 2x/day at the same time everyday, i.e. when you first wake up & before you go to bed
- log your readings
- Know your numbers. If you blood pressure is 140/90 or above, call your provider. If 160/110 or above, seek medical attention immediately.
