❤️ Tomorrow is National Wear Red Day, an annual event that aims to raise awareness about women’s heart health.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women, causing one in three deaths each year. It claims more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Women’s heart disease is often overlooked or misdiagnosed, which is why awareness, education, and prevention are so important.

This February, during Heart Health Month, take charge of your heart health by:
✔️ Eating a heart-healthy diet
✔️ Staying physically active
✔️ Managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
✔️ Not smoking
✔️ Getting enough sleep
✔️ Keeping up with regular checkups and screenings
✔️ Talking with your health care provider about your personal and family history and any risk factors you may have

BronxCare’s Division of Cardiology is at the forefront in the prevention and treatment of heart disease. Our inpatient and outpatient facilities are providing high quality, state-of-the-art services to manage coronary heart disease and treat heart attacks, heart failure, and abnormal heart rhythms.

❄️💨 For many people with asthma, symptoms can feel harder to manage during the winter months.

Cold weather is a common asthma trigger because cold, dry air can irritate airways and cause them to tighten, making breathing more difficult. Winter can also bring increased exposure to indoor allergens (like dust mites and mold) as well as respiratory infections, all of which may worsen asthma symptoms.

If you have asthma, these winter tips may help:
✔️ Keep your rescue inhaler with you at all times.
✔️ Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf when outdoors to help warm the air you breathe.
✔️ Try to breathe in through your nose to help warm, humidify, and filter air.
✔️ Use a humidifier at home if the air is dry, and keep it clean to prevent mold or bacteria growth.
✔️ Talk with your doctor about an asthma management plan that works for you.

During Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, we recognize the vital role that access to comprehensive addiction treatment services plays in the health of our community.

For individuals with chemical dependency problems, BronxCare’s Life Recovery Center is one of the few facilities in New York State to combine inpatient, outpatient, and residential treatment programs at one location. It includes 20 detoxification and 25 rehabilitation beds, in addition to outpatient programs. “We provide medication-assisted treatment, individual and group counseling, and patient education programs, as well as a community residence within the Life Recovery Center that offers patients a stable living environment during their recovery,” stated Dr. Eliseo Go, Medical Director, Addiction Services.

The Department of Psychiatry is also responding to the Opioid Crisis with expanded addiction services that target at-risk individuals. Its Opioid Treatment program is providing a full range of treatment options.

The A1C test—also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test—is a simple blood test used to diagnose prediabetes or diabetes and to monitor progress. It measures average blood sugar level over the previous two to three months.

A1C is different from a blood glucose test, which measures the amount of glucose in your blood at the moment of testing.

Monitoring A1C levels can help detect diabetes early and guide treatment before complications develop. Genetics are a significant factor in developing diabetes, but diet, physical activity, stress management, and medications (when needed) play important roles in keeping A1C in a healthy range.

The Outpatient practices are the heartbeat of BronxCare’s Orthopaedics Department, with over 40,000 patients seen annually. Referrals are also made from BronxCare’s Emergency Department.

As Vice Chair of Orthopaedics and Director of Outpatient Orthopaedics, Dr. Ashok Dubey oversees the daily flow and management of Outpatient Orthopaedics. “We are proud of both the accessibility and quality care given to patients. The orthopaedic services offered by our outpatient practices are uncommon for a hospital-based practice,” stated Dr. Dubey.

Patients in the orthopaedic practices can expect to have access to top-quality bracing and orthotics, casting services, and a wide range of injection therapies, including long-acting cortisone (Zilretta®), as well as platelet-rich plasma, a highly effective natural anti-inflammatory approach to arthritis.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about one of the most preventable cancers.

Cervical cancer often develops slowly and may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages. That’s why routine screening and prevention are so important. Regular cervical cancer screenings—such as Pap tests and HPV tests—can detect abnormal changes before cancer develops.

Do you know the difference between a Pap test (Pap smear) and an HPV test? ➡️ Click through the album to learn more.

Speak with your health care provider about when and how often you should be screened. 💚
