A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is suddenly interrupted. During a stroke, every minute counts. Getting medical help quickly can reduce brain damage and significantly improve chances of recovery.

The acronym BE FAST can help you recognize the signs of stroke and take action.

Always call 911 immediately. Do not try to get to the hospital yourself. Paramedics are trained and equipped to assess your condition and provide critical, life-saving care as they transport you to the hospital.

❄️ 💔 Cold weather isn’t just unpleasant—it can also stress your heart. Studies show that heart attack hospitalizations often rise after cold spells.

As temperatures drop, take extra care while outdoors, especially if you’re older or have underlying heart conditions.

Protect your heart by staying warm:
✔️ Limit time spent outdoors in frigid temperatures.
✔️ Dress in warm layers, including a hat, scarf, and gloves.
✔️ Don’t overdo strenuous activities like shoveling snow, which can increase heart attack risk.
✔️ Know the warning signs of heart attack and stroke.
✔️ Check in on older adults and loved ones during extreme cold.

🎁 December is National Safe Toys and Gifts Month, a great reminder to shop and give safely this holiday season.

Every year, thousands of children are treated in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries, many of which are preventable. Common hazards include small parts that can cause choking; button batteries and loose magnets that can lead to serious internal injuries if swallowed; and long strings or cords that can pose strangulation risks.

We are proud to highlight Dr. Kevin R. Jain, Director, BronxCare Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care, and Chief, Medical Oncology and Hematology.

Dr. Jain is a highly renowned and experienced specialist in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies, gastrointestinal oncology, lung cancer, and lymphoma, among other oncology areas. Prior to joining BronxCare, he served on the faculty of Yale Medical Group at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Under Dr. Jain’s leadership, the BronxCare Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care facility includes an expert team of oncologists, certified oncology nurses, and experienced support staff. Located at 1775 Grand Concourse with street-level access, the facility encompasses more than 10,000 square feet of space and includes dedicated chemotherapy and immunotherapy infusion suites, as well as a specialized pharmacy onsite.

BronxCare’s Foot Program, led by Dr. David Wong, Director of Foot Surgery, provides expert care for foot problems at every stage.

A major component of the program is a comprehensive approach to treating serious foot wounds, particularly those caused by diabetes. Dr. Wong and his team combine surgical expertise with advanced biological therapies to achieve optimal results in even the most complex of cases.

The program also includes a nationally recognized, minimally invasive bunion surgery called Bunionplasty®. This approach offers stable, minimal pain surgery through nearly microscopic incisions.

BronxCare’s Department of Orthopaedics treats more than 50,000 patients and performs 2,000 operations annually. As Chairman, Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum has focused his efforts on the development of systems that produce quality outcomes and patient satisfaction, while maximizing access.

Dr. Kirschenbaum’s Orthopaedic team offers the most advanced and safest treatments to patients with bone and joint problems, including hip, knee, and shoulder replacements; spine, hand, and foot surgery; sports medicine; and trauma care, among other specialties.

Dr. Kirschenbaum is also moving forward with a Community Outreach Program where the Orthopaedic physicians provide specialty services at offices in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan.

BronxCare’s Neurosurgery team, under the leadership of Dr. Ramesh Babu, is staffed with board-certified neurosurgeons performing advanced, highly specialized brain and spine surgery. Patients with serious trauma-related injuries, complex tumors, strokes, aneurysms, vascular malformations, disc herniations, and degenerative spine and nerve disorders, among other conditions, are benefiting from our services.

At BronxCare, neurosurgeons work with primary care physicians and neurologists, in addition to oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists, to develop an individualized treatment plan for the patient. This may include surgery, ongoing follow-up with primary care, physical therapy, and rehabilitation.

When it comes to brain and spine conditions, early diagnosis, intervention, and treatment often lead to safer and better outcomes.
