Calvary officially opened its renovated lobby and new Family Care Center this week, transforming the hospital’s ground floor into a space designed for emotional and spiritual respite.
“This lobby and Family Care Center are the modern manifestations of our promise that no one shall be abandoned,” said Jeff Menkes, chair of the Calvary Hospital Board.
Designed to support the hospital’s signature “unit of care” model, which treats the patient and family as a single entity, the Center includes professional workspaces, a kitchenette, and private rooms for families to meet with doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains. The space also features 317-gallon fish tank, offering a calming focus for visitors and families navigating the stress of a loved one’s illness.
“The Calvary mission does not have an off switch; we are a 24-hour-a-day mission,” said Michael J. Fosina, president of Calvary Hospital. “When a family arrives here at 3:00 a.m., exhausted, the first thing they will feel in this space is a warm embrace.”
“In this new Family Care Center, we will be with families to comfort them, to care, and to plan. We’ll have the most important conversations with them because the family is at the center of our mission. They are the core from which everything else radiates,” added Alma Carrington, MD, Attending Physician.
Blessed by Christopher J. Devron, SJ, President, Regis High School, the new lobby and Family Care Center were funded through strategic reinvestment from ArchCare, the healthcare ministry of the Archdiocese of New York, and generous support from the Calvary community.
