This Memorial Day, Calvary remembers the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As a community shaped by care, compassion, commitment, dignity, and non-abandonment, we hold this day with solemn gratitude. We also recognize the patients, families, and staff whose lives have been touched by military service, including those who have served, those who continue to serve, and those who carry the memory of loved ones who did not return home. Today, we honor the fallen by remembering their sacrifice and by remaining faithful to the people entrusted to our care.

Calvary officially opened its renovated lobby and new Family Care Center this week, transforming the hospital’s ground floor into a space designed for emotional and spiritual respite.
“This lobby and Family Care Center are the modern manifestations of our promise that no one shall be abandoned,” said Jeff Menkes, chair of the Calvary Hospital Board.
Designed to support the hospital’s signature “unit of care” model, which treats the patient and family as a single entity, the Center includes professional workspaces, a kitchenette, and private rooms for families to meet with doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains. The space also features 317-gallon fish tank, offering a calming focus for visitors and families navigating the stress of a loved one’s illness.
“The Calvary mission does not have an off switch; we are a 24-hour-a-day mission,” said Michael J. Fosina, president of Calvary Hospital. “When a family arrives here at 3:00 a.m., exhausted, the first thing they will feel in this space is a warm embrace.”
“In this new Family Care Center, we will be with families to comfort them, to care, and to plan. We’ll have the most important conversations with them because the family is at the center of our mission. They are the core from which everything else radiates,” added Alma Carrington, MD, Attending Physician.
Blessed by Christopher J. Devron, SJ, President, Regis High School, the new lobby and Family Care Center were funded through strategic reinvestment from ArchCare, the healthcare ministry of the Archdiocese of New York, and generous support from the Calvary community.

At Calvary, we believe that the heart of our mission — unwavering love and the promise of non-abandonment — is a reflection of a mother’s enduring spirit. This Mother’s Day, we honor the extraordinary strength of those who nurture, comfort, and advocate, whether through birth, family, friendship, or vocation. We celebrate the profound light you bring, and brought, to life’s most meaningful moments and extend our deepest gratitude to every mother and caregiver for the lasting imprint your compassion leaves on the world. To the mothers on our staff, the mothers in our care, and those remembering a mother’s love today, we wish you a day of peace and gratitude. From all of us at Calvary, Happy Mother’s Day!

Calvary is pleased to report that President Michael J Fosina MPH, FACHE has been listed among City & State’s 2026 Bronx Power 100. Mr. Fosina’s position among Bronx leaders highlights the critical, community-focused role of Calvary’s specialized palliative care and his expansion of Calvary Hospice. “My role is to ensure that the needs of our most vulnerable residents, especially those facing end-of-life care, remain a priority in our community and that Calvary is recognized as a pillar within our borough’s healthcare infrastructure,” Mr. Fosina said.

At Calvary, we believe no one should face life’s final journey alone.
This week, we were honored to host our inaugural Interfaith Conference on Palliative and End-of-Life Care. Calvary Hospital brought together faith leaders from across Greater New York to talk about something that matters to every family: how to provide care that honors the whole person in body, mind, and spirit. Since 1899 our goal has been the same: to replace fear with peace and ensure every member of our community feels supported.
