Regular exercise is likely NOT able to overcome the harmful effects of sitting all day...

Perhaps we've been beating a dead horse on this subject, but it's worth repeating: sitting all day is bad for you. Like, really, really bad.

Hit by a car while riding his bike at the of 14, Tim Haitz was critically injured; spending days in a coma, weeks in the Intensive Care Unit, and months in traction. He didn't stand and bare weight for almost 10 months after his accident.

After the accident, his life as he knew it, changed. Called "swivel" for the unusual manner in which he walked by kids who were once his friends, Tim also stopped doing all the athletic and active things he once loved. Never properly rehabilitating his injuries, he went on to live a life of dysfunction and pain. It wasn't until his late 30's when he began to work with a physical therapist that his life would change course yet again, but for the better. He overcame his disabilities to become a professional cyclist, and was so inspired the impact of his physical therapist, he returned to school to become a physical therapist.

In this episode of Move Forward Radio, Tim discusses his injuries, how they affected his life, and how physical therapy changed his course. Tim's physical therapist Michael Noonan, MS, PT, joins him to talk about the complexities of overcoming those injuries, and what Tim has achieved. http://bit.ly/1qmA3Vl

In this episode of Move Forward Radio, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian Burnikel, MD, and physical therapist Jackie DelGiorno, PT, DPT, OCS, discuss what patients face when they elect to get a total knee replacement - from the crucial pre-operative conditioning, to the surgery itself, to the almost immediate physical therapy that follows, and the long-term prognosis. http://bit.ly/1kwOJ1P

Hip fractures in older adults can be severely debilitating and can lead to significant medical expenses, but a study published in the American Journal of Public Health (“Physical Activity and Inactivity and Risk of Hip Fractures in Men” – April 2014) suggests that 4 hours of walking each week can significantly reduce hip fracture risk later in life.

Data from a study of nearly 36,000 men, conducted over a 24-year period, revealed that men who walked 4 or more hours a week at a brisk pace had a 62% lower risk of hip fracture than men who walked fewer than 4 hours a week, and that even men who walked 4 or more hours a week at a slower pace experienced a 43% lower risk of fracture than men who walked fewer than 4 hours a week. http://bit.ly/1rCkUFy

- Pain is a construct of the mind 100% of the time
- Pain is an output of the brain used to protect us
- Pain is not a measure of tissue damage
- The more input that indicates something is dangerous (eg, spinal models with "slipped discs") the more likely the brain produces pain as an output to protect us.
- The longer we have pain (duration) the easier it is to experience pain (hypersensitivity)
- The longer we have pain, the less precise and specific it is (pain spreads)

Why do we hurt? Do we actually experience pain, or is it merely illusion? In this video, Lorimer Moseley explores these questions, and position the pain that...
