EMDR might sound complicated, but the idea behind it is actually simple.

When children or adults experience something overwhelming, the brain sometimes can't fully process the memory. It can stay "stuck" and continue to trigger emotional distress.

EMDR helps the brain finish processing those memories. Through guided eye movements or tapping, the brain can reprocess the experience so it feels less overwhelming over time.

The memory doesn't disappear but the emotional intensity often decreases. Many people find EMDR helpful for trauma, anxiety, and distressing experiences.

Healing is possible. 🌿

Not every child thrives in loud summer camps.

Some kids need a smaller, supportive space to grow.

Campfire Kids is a therapeutic nature-based summer camp where children can build confidence, practice social skills and connect with others in a calm and supportive group.

Instead of crowded camps, we keep our groups intentionally small so kids can feel safe, seen and encouraged.

During the week kids will:
🌿 Explore nature
🤝 Practice friendship skills
💬 Learn healthy ways to express emotions

All guided by child therapists who specialize in helping kids grow emotionally and socially.

Grateful moments like this matter ☕

Jorge and I attended the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce gathering, hosted by the very coffee shop where our new office is located. Community truly starts right outside our door.

Huge thank you to Galindo’s Coffee, not only for being incredible landlords, but for welcoming us into a vibrant, supportive network and inviting us to be more involved in the community we serve.

Here’s to connection, collaboration and showing up locally.

What does a litter grabber in the woods have to do with trauma therapy?

During our EMDR Nature Trail, we translate the EMDR standard protocol into real-world experiences in the forest.

One skill we practice is distancing. Sometimes the stories we carry are hard to visit. In EMDR, distancing helps us approach difficult memories while maintaining enough space to tolerate them.

On the trail, we practice this in a tangible way. As we explore the woods, we may notice objects that spark curiosity but also hesitation. Instead of avoiding them, we use a litter grabber to explore from a safe distance. It’s a simple exercise that mirrors trauma work.

Just like the grabber allows us to interact with something safely in the environment, EMDR provides tools that help us approach difficult memories with support and stability.

Sometimes healing begins by learning how to approach something scary from a place of safety.

Because sometimes healing happens better side by side than face to face.

What if “bad behavior” is actually a sensory reaction? 🌿

Last week at BakerRipley Head Start, we trained teachers on TBRI® Empowering Principles focusing on what’s really happening underneath big emotions. When adults understand regulation, everything changes.

We’re also incredibly grateful to welcome our newest counselor, Sherrie Ervin, who will begin seeing clients March 1 🩷💙

Sherrie brings a warm, person-centered, and creative approach to therapy. She has experience in Child-Centered Play Therapy, mindfulness and DBT skills, and trauma-informed care. She’s passionate about helping children express big feelings, teens navigate hard seasons, and adults rebuild with hope especially families impacted by substance use and recovery.

Her heart is simple: that every client feels seen, respected and supported. And we’re so thankful she’s part of the Happy Camper family.

Scaffolding is a developmental parenting approach that helps children build independence, step by step.

Instead of expecting kids to “just know,” scaffolding means meeting them where they are, offering support based on their current skills and experience and gradually stepping back as confidence grows.

Whether it’s folding a shirt, managing emotions, or learning new routines, independence depends on experience, not pressure.

This approach is especially powerful for children with anxiety, trauma histories, or developmental differences.

At Happy Camper Child and Family Therapy, we support families using child-centered, trauma-informed care that honors development and builds lifelong skills.
