This is one reason having a doula at the hospital to coach you through labor is so beneficial! Nursing staff only support 13% of a patient’s active phase of labor and they spend 50-75% of their time OUTSIDE of a laboring patient’s room. They are doing very needed things (and thank goodness we have them!), but that also means they are not supporting you in the more personalized ways that you need.

One month ago these mighty parents started their 2 (almost 3!) day labor. It was so beautiful to see them acting as a team to practice the skills they learned in our prenatal appointments. Chris was calm, gentle, and so encouraging! Natalie was strong and graceful as she endured a difficult induction.

This labor was a testament to how empowering love can be! Natalie could have easily felt discouraged given the length of her induction and some difficult decisions that needed to be made. But with the love and encouragement of her support team, she remained hopeful and navigated each decision and intervention with grace.

Natalie was truly incredible!

Birth coaches are given a unique position to observe the needs of couples from an outside perspective and anticipate or fill their needs. This allows the mom to focus completely on her labor without distraction and for her partner to support her fully.

Counterpressure.

Have you ever heard of that as a pain relief method for labor?

Counterpressure is one the most powerful tools that spouses and birth coaches can use to help you endure and enjoy your labor!

So what is it?

If you’ve ever taken a birth class, they have probably mentioned the “double hip squeeze”. Essentially, your partner will use the palms of their hands to squeeze the flat part of your pelvis inwards. Using this during contractions can REALLY take away some of the pain and intensity of the sensations. It also works WITH contractions! As the contraction is squeezing your uterus to help the baby work their way down and out, the squeezing of the upper portion of your pelvis can actually help the lower portion to open up wider and accept the baby!

There are many other forms of applying counterpressure to help you through the intense pressure of your contracting uterus. Even with the use of an epidural, counterpressure is a life changing measure! Labors tend to be shorter and less painful when a birth coach is present to use and teach such techniques.

As your birth coach, we promise to teach your partner all these tricks to help you through labor! We will also be with you throughout your labor to apply counterpressure. It’s a bit of a workout, so having two people taking turns can be so helpful! (And no…I’m not comparing this to the workout you will experience while in labor! 😉 We know you are doing the real work, so we just want to stay as strong and present as possible so we can meet all your needs!)

Welcome to Empower Birth Coaching! Giving birth in a hospital can feel daunting. Our mission is to empower every mother to navigate the birthing process with confidence so that she can write her own labor story. We work with you and your medical team (OBGYN, midwife, and nurses).

While your medical team will be incredibly competent, they also have 20 minute appointments and hundreds of patients which makes it impossible for them to give you the indiviudalized time and attention needed to prepare you for labor and parenthood.

This is where your birth coach comes in! She will guide you each step of the way, making sure you are informed and supported and that your voice is heard! Coaches will prepare both you and your support people to be fully confident throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period!
