Colton Lowe had an epiphany last year: his body was holding him back.

Lowe, 23, suspected that his weight was getting dangerously high and that his health may be in jeopardy, but he wasn't too concerned. Then in January 2021, he turned the ignition of his newly refurbished Ford Mustang and realized one simple truth. He was too big to safely drive the car.

"That car was the final nail in the coffin for me. I had spent the summer and fall of 2020 getting it to where I can drive it," the Conroe, Texas native tells PEOPLE.

The car had been his project during COVID, and was supposed to be a culmination of his time, skills and passion. But it has also served as a catalyst for the once 478-lb. Lowe to make major lifestyle changes. Through determination combined with weight loss surgery, he has now lost more than 280 lbs.

Lowe, who works in an auto shop as a parts salesperson, knows his way around a car. He and his father worked on the project together, and his dad found the car. "It was kind of a father and son kind of deal," Lowe says.

Before any major medical event, most of us have questions. We have compiled a list that our staff at Balette Bariatric Center in The Woodlands answers on a regular basis. If you ever have questions about your upcoming procedure don't be afraid to ask Dr. Balette or any staff members. We are always happy to answer your questions about pre-op, surgical, or post-op questions.

IS GASTRIC SLEEVE SAFE?
The gastric sleeve procedure is safer than other weight-loss procedures. This is a great option for patients with obesity who want to permanently lose weight without any side effects.

Gastric Sleeve surgery is very simple when performed by an experienced and competent surgeon. Gastric sleeve surgery is not a weight-loss procedure that requires the surgeon to make a new connection between your stomach and small bowel. The chances of long-term complications are very low.

After undergoing a gastric sleeve, there is almost no chance of developing an internal hernia or marginal ulcers. Patients who have undergone other weight-loss surgery are more likely to experience these complications.

Some patients who undergo weight loss surgery experience a relapse many years later. The extent of their obesity relapses depends on what procedure they had. Revision surgery is an additional procedure that can help these individuals lose weight and address specific conditions.

Weight regain can be caused by many factors. Because the patient's anatomy has changed and requires repair, revision surgery may be necessary. Dr. Jason Balette of The Woodlands' Balette Bariatric Center of The Woodlands says that patients also come to us because they have gained weight due to changes in their behavior or new stressors. "Others who have had gastric bands procedures now see their family or friends getting better results from the sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. They want these benefits."

This interview features Dr. Balette discussing when and how revision can be helpful.
