Most importantly, try to avoid sticky, or chewy foods such as popcorn, gum, caramels, hard candy, nuts, crunchy chips, and ice, which can damage braces and slow progress.

Braces or not, if your gums look red, puffy, or irritated, the first thing to check is: do they bleed when you brush or touch them?

Bleeding usually indicates that there’s an infection or inflammation that needs some extra attention. In most cases, a few days of gentle, meticulous brushing is enough to get them back on track. Once the bleeding stops, your gums are considered to be healthy again.

If the bleeding does not stop after a week, then it’s time to seek some extra help from your dentist or orthodontist.

Healthy gums are the foundation of a great smile, and we want yours to stay strong, so give us a call or a visit if you have any questions!
