Sauna hats have been part of sauna culture for a long time, especially in places like Finland and Eastern Europe.

Since heat rises, your head is the first thing to get really hot in the sauna. A wool or felt hat helps protect your head and hair so the rest of your body can enjoy the heat longer.

Some people buy them, some people make their own, and you’ll see all kinds of designs.

And honestly, even a simple towel works. Keeping your head covered helps protect your scalp and hair from the hottest air in the sauna.

If you’ve ever been to a real Russian banya you might see someone getting smacked with a bundle of leaves and be a little confused.

That’s a venik.

Usually birch or oak branches. Sounds strange but it’s been part of banya culture for centuries.

Once the leaves heat up they get soft and someone lightly taps or brushes your back with it. It helps move the heat around, gets the blood flowing, opens the pores, and the smell from the leaves in the steam is honestly one of the best parts.

It looks a little ridiculous if you’ve never seen it before, but once you try it you realize why people have been doing it for hundreds of years.

Sauna has always been part of my life.

Growing up Russian going to the banya wasn’t some wellness trend it was just normal. It’s a centuries old tradition back in the old country. Friends, family, hot sauna, cold water, tea, food, and sitting around talking for hours. Sweat, cool down, eat something, talk, then go back in.

A lot of Europe has this built into life. It’s not just about the sweat, the food and social side is a big part of it too.

Now the U.S. is starting to get into sauna and cold plunges through the wellness world, but for a lot of us it’s something we’ve been doing forever.

With how fast and stressful life is now having a place to slow down, sweat it out, eat, and talk with people feels more important than ever.
