Bursitis can be painful and disruptive, there are several preventive measures you can take to reduce your risk of developing this condition:

1. Avoid Overuse: Moderation is key. If you engage in activities that strain your knees, take regular breaks and avoid excessive repetition.

2. Proper Techniques: Learn and practice correct body mechanics for activities like lifting and kneeling to minimize pressure on your knees. Use knee pads, sit on a stool, or find other ways to reduce overuse of the knees.

3. Supportive Footwear: Wear appropriate footwear that provides proper cushioning, posture, and support, especially if you are physically active.

4. Strengthen Muscles: Strengthening the muscles around the knee can help stabilize the joint and reduce strain on the bursae. Use your muscles to support your weight rather than relying on the joint for support.

5. Warm-Up and Cool Down: Always warm up before physical activity and cool down afterward to prepare your body and prevent abrupt stress on your knees. Do gentle stretching exercises, as well.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, also known as runnerโ€™s knee, is characterized by pain and discomfort around the front of the knee.

It is commonly caused by overuse, poor alignment of the patella (kneecap), muscle imbalances, or trauma.

Athletes with this condition often experience pain while running, jumping, or going up and down stairs.

Treatment for patellofemoral syndrome focuses on reducing pain and restoring proper biomechanics.

It may involve physical therapy, strengthening exercises, orthotics, bracing, and modifying the patientโ€™s activities to reduce stress on the knee.

Here are some exercises that can help protect your knees from arthritis:

Low-impact Aerobic Activities:
Opt for exercises that are easy on the joints, such as swimming, cycling, or using an elliptical machine. These activities provide cardiovascular benefits without subjecting your knees to excessive stress.

Strength Training:
-Strengthening the muscles around your knees is vital for stability. Include exercises that target the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles, as they play a significant role in knee support. Leg presses, lunges, and squats are excellent options for strengthening these muscle groups.

Flexibility and Range of Motion Exercises:
-Regular stretching can improve flexibility and maintain the full range of motion in your knees. Incorporate yoga or tai chi exercises that will enhance flexibility and reduce the risk of injury.

Balance and Stability Training:
-Incorporate exercises that improve balance and stability, such as standing on one leg or using a balance board. These exercises enhance proprioception, reducing the chances of falls or awkward movements that could damage your knees.

Proper Technique and Injury Prevention:
-Adopting proper technique during physical activities can help protect your knees from injury and minimize the risk of developing arthritis. Whether running, jumping, or participating in sports, be mindful of your body mechanics. Using proper form and technique reduces the strain on your knee joints, preventing unnecessary wear and tear.

Preparation:
-Itโ€™s also essential to take precautions to avoid knee injuries. Always warm up before exercising, wear appropriate footwear, and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your activities. If you participate in high-impact sports or activities, consider using protective gear such as knee pads or braces to provide extra support and stability.

10/09/2023

Through overuse and aging, our joints often become weak and painful, limiting movement and affecting daily lives. Healthy joint ends are covered with a cushioning layer of cartilage that protects the bones from rubbing against each other and causing pain.

The effects of time and excessive wear-and-tear causes this cartilage to slowly wear away and leave our joints weak and unprotected.

Joints refer to the area where two or more bones meet. While there are different kinds of joints all over our bodies, the ones most commonly used and more easily damaged are synovial joints.

Synovial joints include those in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles and feet.

Joint disorders are common because of the frequent pressure applied to the area throughout our lives. They are most common in athletes and older people. But joint disorders such as arthritis and fractures do not necessarily result in lifelong pain.

Joint reconstructive surgery offers relief for many people through safe and minimally invasive procedures by experienced professionals.

Joint reconstruction ranges from minor repairs to the damaged joint to total joint replacement. These treatment options can offer temporary pain relief or permanent solutions to joint disorders.

The type of treatment best for you depends on the type and severity of your joint disorder. Together, you and your doctor can develop the most effective treatment option for your needs.

To learn more about our Orthopedic Services, please contact us at 805-495-3687 today to schedule an appointment.

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the hip joint.

This procedure can be used to confirm the diagnosis of various imaging procedures, such as X-rays and MRIs, as it provides your doctor with a three-dimensional, real time imaging of the affected area, allowing for the most accurate diagnostic results.

If damage or abnormalities are detected during the diagnostic procedure, repairs can often be made during the same procedure, offering patients many advantages over traditional surgery.

Arthroscopic techniques can often be used to treat conditions such as:
Labral tear
Loose bodies
Snagging hip syndrome
Cartilage damage
Arthritis

A hip fracture involves a break in the top of the femur when the bone angles toward the hip joint.

Hip fractures are especially common in older patients and those with osteoporosis. They are usually extremely painful and require surgical repair to relieve pain and restore proper functioning.

During hip fracture surgery, an incision is made over the affected area and the bones are aligned back in place. The bones are often held in place with metal pins, screws, rods or plates while they heal, which may or may not be removed later on.

The incision is then closed with sutures or staples. This procedure usually takes two to four hours to perform.

Starting ahead of time and staying consistent are critical factors in preventing knee injuries.

If you are an athlete, begin your exercise program in the preseason, well before the season's games or matches commence. If you don't maintain a consistent exercise regimen in the off-season, start slowly and ramp up so that you don't overstress your muscles or joints.

The last thing you want is to cause the injuries you are trying to avoid! Keep up a consistent routine during the season, even if you are doing workouts more directly related to your chosen sport. Injury prevention is an ongoing commitment.

The meniscus, a crescent-shaped cartilage in the knee joint, plays a pivotal role in maintaining knee stability.

Serving as a cushion and shock absorber between the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia), it evenly distributes the body's weight, reducing friction and preventing damage to the articular cartilage.

Beyond its role in weight distribution, the meniscus enhances knee joint stability by aiding in proper tracking of the femur on the tibia during movements, preventing excessive rotation, and acting as a stabilizing wedge, particularly during twisting or pivoting motions.

Overall, the meniscus is crucial for smooth joint function and safeguarding against injuries that could jeopardize knee stability.

From hip to knee, the femoral shaft stands as a pillar of strength.

But when a fracture occurs along its length, it's known as a femoral shaft fracture โ€“ a journey that usually demands surgical intervention for healing.

Here are the 5 types of femoral shaft fractures๐Ÿ‘‡

1๏ธโƒฃ Transverse Fracture: A straight break crossing the femoral shaft.
2๏ธโƒฃ Oblique Fracture: An angled narrative etched across the bone.
3๏ธโƒฃ Spiral Fracture: Like candy cane stripes, a twist-induced tale.
4๏ธโƒฃ Comminuted Fracture: Bone mosaic in three or more pieces, reflecting the force it faced.
5๏ธโƒฃ Open Fracture: When bone breaches skin, a complex saga with higher stakes - more damage, longer healing.

Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common neurological condition that arises when pressure builds up on the median nerve at your wrist. This can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms, such as numbness, pain, and weakness in your hand and wrist, often causing you to wake up and shake it out.

๐Ÿ‘ Crucial Passageway: Imagine your wrist as a tunnel, with the median nerve and finger-bending tendons passing through. When this passage becomes too narrow due to swelling or irritation, CTS can occur, affecting your hand's function and sensation.

๐Ÿ” What To Watch Out For: Early signs include nighttime numbness, swelling sensations, and tingling in your fingers, especially the thumb, index, and middle fingers. As CTS progresses, you might experience tingling during daily activities, mild to severe pain, and even a loss of hand movement.

๐ŸŒŸ Our Path to Relief: Whether you're an avid typist, an artist, or simply someone looking for comfort, our team at Precision Orthopedics understands the impact of CTS on your life. We're here to provide you with comprehensive care, from diagnosis to treatment, focusing on your well-being every step of the way.

Understanding Kyphosis: A Spinal Condition Explained!

Kyphosis, a spinal condition characterized by a forward curvature of the upper back, is essential to recognize for better health management. Diagnosed through X-rays, this condition presents in various forms: Postural, Scheuermann's, and Congenital, each with unique characteristics.

Causes of kyphosis can range from metabolic issues to neuromuscular conditions, impacting individuals differently. Recognizable symptoms include a difference in shoulder height, head bending forward compared to the body, and tight hamstrings. It's essential to be aware of potential risk factors, such as osteoporosis or a family history of the condition.

Treatment options for kyphosis depend on the severity and age of the individual. Exercise and physical therapy can help manage mild cases, while bracing is recommended for growing children with curves greater than 65 degrees. In severe cases, surgery, specifically a posterior spinal fusion with instrumentation, may be necessary.

At TJN Ortho, we understand the importance of supporting you through life's challenges, including medical situations like kyphosis. Our mission is to provide simple and workable financial solutions, ensuring you have the resources you need to navigate any obstacle that comes your way. ๐Ÿฅ Understanding ACL Injuries: A Guide ๐Ÿฅ

Your knee's stability relies on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but when injured, it can cause significant disruption. Located centrally behind the kneecap, pinpointing the injury's exact location can be tricky.

๐Ÿ•’The most common ACL tear is a grade 3 strain, which is a complete tear of the ligament.

๐Ÿšจ CAUSE: The most common trigger is a knee hyperextension with a twist, happening when the knee lacks muscular protection, especially from the hamstrings. Often seen in skiing, basketball, and soccer, even low-force situations can lead to this injury.

๐Ÿ˜ซ SYMPTOMS: A distinct "pop" during the injury, followed by swelling within 24 hours. Initially, pain may be mild, but returning athletes might experience instability (pivoting) later on.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ RECOVERY: Post-surgery, you'll start walking in a protective brace within 1-2 weeks. Optimal rehab paves the way for aggressive sports or heavy labor in around six months. Non-surgical recovery may take three months, restoring strength and reducing swelling.

07/26/2023

Dealing with arthritis requires a comprehensive approach that involves lifestyle modifications and appropriate treatments to manage pain, reduce inflammation, and maintain joint function. Here are some lifestyle and treatment suggestions to help manage arthritis:

1. Regular Exercise:
Engage in low-impact exercises that promote joint flexibility, strength, and overall fitness. Activities like walking, swimming, cycling, and tai chi can help improve joint function and reduce stiffness. Consult with a physical therapist or fitness expert to design a customized exercise program suitable for your specific type of arthritis.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Excess weight puts additional stress on the joints, worsening arthritis symptoms. Adopting a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity can help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reducing the strain on your joints.

3. Get Quality Sleep:
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to heal and recharge. Proper sleep is crucial for managing pain and reducing inflammation.

4. Regular Medical Check-ups:
Stay in touch with your healthcare provider to monitor your arthritis condition, adjust treatments as needed, and address any concerns or changes in your symptoms.

Always consult with your healthcare provider before making significant lifestyle changes or starting new treatments for arthritis. Each individual's condition may vary, and a personalized approach is essential for effective management.

This means no running, no sports, and no physical games.

To stabilize and support the knee and prevent lateral movement, patients should wear a brace even for walking.

Driving should also be avoided. Although it does not seem like driving is very impactful, driving may require quick actions or even slam on the brakes, which could undo the benefits of the surgery.

In addition, many patients have been prescribed painkillers that are a little stronger than over-the-counter medicines, which could impair their judgment and reflexes, or make them drowsy. Consequently, patients will need someone else to do the driving for at least a week or two.

The knee joint is designed to move only in one direction, and it only bends backward, not forward.

Unfortunately, some of the movements we make, or some of the impacts we sustain, can cause the knee to bend to the side or forward. Since the ligaments keep the bones in the right orientation to one another, when the knee bends in a way that it is not designed to, those ligaments can get torn.

Any of these four ligaments (or other ligaments in the knee) can get torn, but the most common injuries are to the ACL and the MCL.

Thankfully, many knee problems can be alleviated today with arthroscopic surgery.

Arthroscopy refers to a minimally invasive surgical procedure by which the surgeon only has to make small incisions in the knee, and surgery is done by inserting a camera and special surgical tools through these incisions in order to carry out the procedure.

One of the benefits of arthroscopic surgery is that it can usually be performed as an outpatient procedure.

To diagnose Patella Tendonitis, your healthcare provider will ask about your medical history, activity level, and symptoms.

It is important to inform your doctor whether your symptoms have changed over time or become worse under specific circumstances.

Next, your healthcare provider will complete a physical exam and manipulate your knee to gauge your mobility. Depending on how long you have been experiencing pain, an MRI may be performed so your doctor can see how much structural damage there is in your tendon.

Pain onset is usually gradual and often begins as an ache directly below the kneecap.

At first, you may feel pain only occasionally following practices or games or at the end of the day, but it will steadily increase until the pain is present during movement.

It will be accompanied by stiffness of the joint, and it may make the extension of the joint challenging. Activities that utilize the patellar tendon, such as squats and walking downhill or down a flight of stairs, will cause pain to intensify.

To diagnose this condition, your healthcare provider will ask about your medical history, activity level, and symptoms. It is important to inform your doctor whether your symptoms have changed over time or become worse under specific circumstances.

In knee replacement surgery, the end of your femur is replaced with a specialized metal shell.

Meanwhile, your tibia is capped with a cup and stem that fit together. If needed, the kneecap or cruciate ligament will be replaced, as well. The procedure takes about three hours.

By giving you a completely new joint, you can regain your mobility and eliminate pain. What is more, the strengthened knee joint can eliminate or lessen the occurrence of injuries that often happen to people with bad knees. By strengthening and stabilizing your knee, youโ€™re less likely to lose your balance and suffer from falls.

A repaired knee can also improve your overall health in collateral ways.

When the knee tendons are repeatedly forced beyond their limits, the patellar tendon eventually becomes sore and loses strength.

The condition is common in athletes who participate in sports like basketball, volleyball, football, figure skating, hockey and running, where the knee joint gets repeatedly used in the same movement, with significant weight loads placed on the joint.

Total knee replacement is what it says: replacing the knee joint with an artificial joint.

The surgery is a common procedure, undertaken over half a million times every year in the United States. While every surgical procedure carries risk such as getting an infection or blood clots, these adverse effects occur in less than 2% of all cases, and 98% of knee replacement patients can expect a positive outcome.

By giving you a completely new joint, you can regain your mobility and eliminate pain.

Depending upon what you have done to your knee, some patients can get back to light activities within a few days.

Today, orthopedic surgeons will generally opt for ways to use arthroscopic surgery first, before considering traditional surgery. Not only is it better for certain types of problems in terms of overall outcome and recovery, but nearly every type of patient can tolerate this method, even those for whom open surgery might be more risky because of other health concerns.

However, not every knee problem can be treated by arthroscopic surgery, and it is not an option for those who need a total knee replacement.

First, people who exercise have increased levels of interleukin, a chemical that protects cartilage, so walking may slow down the degeneration of your cartilage.

Second, studies have also shown that people who exercise have lower levels of a protein in their blood, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, that is associated with the break-down of cartilage.

There are also other benefits.

In our bodies, there is no blood flow to our cartilage. So how does this tissue get nutrients? From joint fluid. The only way to get the joint fluid to the cartilage is through movement, so when you walk, you actually bring needed joint fluid to your knees.

The most common condition that calls for total knee replacement is osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is not a specific disease; rather, it is the condition of progressive degeneration that comes with age and use of the joints, although it can sometimes develop or accelerate as a result of other ailments.

What generally happens is that the cartilage that cushions the surfaces of the knee bones wears down. At a certain point, the cartilage wears down to the point that the bone no longer has an adequate covering of cartilage, and movement of the joint causes bone to grind on bone directly.
