Pivotalstjoe is looking for a Police Social Worker for Sturgis (as well as the ongoing search for our PSW for the county). The PSW position for Sturgis will be open to those with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Social Work. It’s a really fantastic job that my very good friend has set up well. Sturgis is a great community to work for and a great police department to partner with.

The Sheriff’s office position is posted online on indeed currently but the Sturgis position is not yet. It’s open to internal and external candidates, however it should be posted soon and if you have questions or wish to apply please let me know. I’d be happy to answer any questions about either of these positions.

Please share! Come be my teammate.

If you have any information please contact TRPD or dispatch.

One whole year today.

For someone who has struggled to find a true sense of purpose my whole life, I can say this is undoubtedly it. I love this job, I love this community, I love this department, and I love this opportunity I’ve been given.

I’m beyond blessed to be able to do what I do every single day. This year has been eye-opening and after looking back and assessing, I hope to be able to have a better plan to track data and get a more solid hold on how to do things going forward in order to know how to serve this community even better day to day.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for those who have allowed me to do this, for those who have reached out for help, for those who have helped me help others, for those I work with and around, for those that serve the community along side me, for my department, and for those who support me day to day.

I can’t wait for what this year has in store.

I accepted my job a year ago today. In that time, the name has changed, the job description has been created, and a plethora of other things have occurred. I’ve enjoyed my year thoroughly, though it’s been the most difficult job I’ve ever had. Being a Police Social Worker for the TRPD has been the most gratifying and difficult job I’ve ever had and I would not trade it for anything. I’m looking forward to many more years and seeing what happens as we grow and progress here.

Part of being a social worker- no matter the role you fill- is that you never stop advocating. What I have learned is that also means advocating for yourself!

Part of that in *this* role has been making sure I’m clearly and appropriately marked as a social worker. Why is that important? Because I work with police and also wear appropriate clothing for all sorts of weather (tactical pants, boots, a vest, etc.) The whole point of this job is being a social worker- not law enforcement. Because the vast majority of people feel more comfortable with me, a social worker. Because in situations I’m in, we need a social worker to do what I’m doing. That’s the point of my role. So I need to make sure I’m clearly marked as a social worker. Just as law enforcement is clearly marked for their role, I need to be clearly marked for mine- especially responding alongside them. For the last year I’ve gone out in a vest alone that has had my name on the front, social worker on the chest, and social worker on the back. Fine and dandy for when I wear my vest (majority of the time and on calls). However, I previously did not have a uniform other than that under my vest so when my vest is off I have had no markings.

We (my counter part and I) took this issue to my boss not long ago who, with no hesitation, agreed to let us get whatever we needed to make us comfortable. All we had to do was advocate for ourselves. My Chief and I sat down and made mock ups and then sent them to a local shirt maker and our uniforms were made. Now I am fully and clearly marked every single day. I have my name on my chest, the pivotal logo on the other side (previously CMH), TRPD on one sleeve, social worker on the other, and social worker across the back. After a year of discourse about my clothing, I could not be more thrilled. So if you see me wearing this on duty, I’m lit up light a social work Christmas tree because I am really trying to tell you exactly who I am.

Just wanted to say thank you again to the community of Three Rivers and St. Joseph County. You have all been so lovely and welcoming the past year. It’s such a pleasure working and serving here.
