When Amanda “Katie” Lemmers, FNP, started on her healthcare journey, she was interested in neurology and then pediatric physical therapy.

As she learned more about the many aspects of medical care, she became interested in becoming a nurse practitioner and found her specialty while helping a patient who suffered from heart disease.

“The patient was in ICU multiple times with cardiac interventions, and eventually had open heart surgery,” she recalls. That person ended up suffering from a cardiac arrest. She and her colleagues helped get the heart pumping again and the patient was able to walk out of the hospital five days later. “It was then I knew in my heart that if I could help just one more person with heart disease, I would,” she says.”

Three Rivers Health Homecare and Hospice registered nurse Stefanie Patrick cares for patients in their homes within a radius of about 30 miles. While the flexibility of her job is what first attracted her to the field after the birth of her son, now, 16 years later, Stefanie will tell you that she can’t imagine doing anything else. She simply loves what she does.

“I enjoy meeting people where they are,” Stefanie explained. “And you become a part of their family — I really appreciate that part of it.”

Delivering care with a personal touch is important to her, too.

“I treat patients like they are my family — as if they are my own. I can talk to anyone about anything, so I try to find that commonality and develop trust.”

When it comes to hospice care, Stefanie wishes that families would connect to services sooner rather than later for the significant physical, emotional and spiritual support that hospice nurses can provide throughout an individual’s care journey.

“Hospice is hard for families. If I can make that journey a little easier, that’s all the reward I need.”

In honor of National Volunteer Week and National Volunteers Month, we’re shining a light on the Beacon volunteers who share their dedication and compassion in service to our community each day.

Three Rivers Health and the Beacon Health Foundation recently recognized the members of the Three Rivers Health Auxiliary for their generosity in purchasing a new digital sign for one of the entrances to the hospital. The Auxiliary spends countless hours in the gift shop, snack bar and on numerous fundraisers to help purchase items for the hospital. The Auxiliary members are a very valuable asset to Three Rivers Health, and we are grateful for their hard work and commitment.
