There have been lots of exciting changes transpiring at Mettā Holistic Health. I’d like to share with you all that I’ve hired my first employee!
Meet Nora. She’s just 10 weeks old. She’s a Minature English Cream Daschund. I have wanted a service/facility dog for a long time. The goal is for her to put clients at ease and love on them when they’re needing it. I loved that she would always be small. She’s easy to take anywhere, small enough for folks to be comfortable with and even sit on the table if they are wanting that.
We got her two weeks ago and it’s crazy how much she has impacted our lives and those around her. People have literally stopped traffic to see her. We’ve met neighbors who’ve asked us if we’re new in town. 😂😂😂😂 Nope, we just actually socialize now. Young or old, all genders and races. She brings everyone together and brings everyone she meets pure joy.
I showed a picture of her to one of my professors. The first thing he noticed were her eyes (we did, too). He said, “you know she picked you both, right?” Suddenly my eyes filled with tears because I knew what he meant. Already she has taught me to be more present (which is hard for me). She also teaches us patience (also a hard one for me 😂). She’s curious, fearless (she loves riding on the motorcycle), and so very sweet.
We’re just about to start her training. She’s still a wee little lass so we have to wait a bit but I’m bringing her in to start getting her used to the clinic. For friends and family that are open, I bring her in for training prep. As you can see in the photos, she’s quite comfortable. The only time it’s okay to be sleeping on the job.
Anyways, I can’t wait for you to meet her soon and I know she’s excited to meet you. She’s kinda a local celebrity around town. Hope she doesn’t turn into a Diva. 😂

First day of my Observation Rotation in Clinic. I’m not allowed to do anything, touch anything, chart anything, or really even speak but it’s still an exciting baby-step on the way to becoming an Acupuncturist. 😂

When my Grandmother passed my Mom gave me several sentimental pieces, two of which are a Jade ring and a ceramic vase pin. She’s always put a flower in it and pinned it to her dressy knit outfits. Shawn pinned the Vase on me today (which meant a lot to me) so I could have my Grandma with me in clinic. I am also wearing her Jade ring which is funny because Jade is an incredibly important stone in Chinese Medicine. I’m a total believer there are no coincidences!

I’m often told by intuitives that my Grandmother is very present with me. One of them said she is overjoyed that I am walking into this realm. When I told my Mom this she mentioned that my Grandma actually got Acupuncture often. I never knew this. Again, I just don’t think this is a coincidence. 💚🪡

Anyway, hope to see lots of people getting the medicine they need today.

We learned a new thing in class, today. I present to you (drum roll, please), Moxa! 🌿

Moxa is made from dried Mugwort. Moxa promotes blood circulation and qi, so it is helpful for pain, which occurs when blood or qi stagnates. There are SO many more uses for it but I’ll keep it short and sweet. Although, do you know Moxa can help flip a breeched baby?! Okay, I’ll stop now. 😂 You burn it over or on the body and I gotta tell you, the heat feels divine.

Our instructor, Dr. Ken Glowacki says “Moxa is basically concentrated sunlight. It has a deep infrared signature.” It also smells amazing in my humble opinion.

I am a student so I am not permitted to practice outside of school BUT next time you see your Acupuncturist, do inquire about it.

My heart feels good this morning. I had the opportunity to connect with my fellow Chinese Medicine Cohort as well as folks from the ND program. It was so nice to be outside of school, not nose deep in our books, and learn something hands-on that we can use for self-care. I don’t think there’s anyone more stressed out than a Grad student. 😂

I am really grateful for the grace everyone gave me as it was officially my first workshop I’ve formally taught. I hope everyone learned a bunch. I know I learned a lot from everyone. I didn’t just learn how to be a better instructor but I learned that I’m extremely self-critical. I was worried no one would show up, what if my power point slides sucked, what if I didn’t have enough Vegan options for food, what if I forgot things (I did but I also didn’t die), what if I struggled to explain things clearly, did I have enough teaching aids, what if someone asked a question I didn’t know the answer to. . . . the list goes on. Anyways, whoah, that’s an exhausting way to be. The class reflected back to me that I need to be kinder to myself.

I also just want to say that anytime someone says they did something with no help from anyone, EVER, I’m a bit skeptical. I am grateful that my Mom went food shopping with me and helped my cook and plate the food. I’m grateful for my partner that helped me move all my office furniture and set-up class. I’m grateful for my friends that loaned me Massage tables, I’m grateful to my classmates that helped me wash dishes (thank you ), take out trash, and sanitize the MILLIONS of cups we used, I’m grateful for the huge group that showed up. . . . . I most certainly did not do this on my own. It takes a village. Thank you to my village! ❤️

I asked my parents if they wanted to come over for dinner so I could practice palpating Acupuncture Points. True to form, my Dad shuffled through the door and ate a delicious meal (which had onions in it even though he claims to hate onions), he had his glass of red wine (he’s basically Italian now), the football game was on, and I had dessert ready to go after my study sesh. The man gets the royal treatment! Can you believe I had to do all that just to get him to help in my pursuit of a Higher Education?! 😂

All kidding aside, I’m grateful my parents are so supportive. (Also, my siblings have ALL received Acupuncture.Their sister may be the hippy in the family but they know good medicine when they feel it)! My parents believe in what I am doing. They know the benefits of Chinese Medicine because they’ve also felt it and seen it.

My Mom is a retired Nurse so it means a lot to me that she see’s the value of this Medicine, even if it’s different than the Medicine she learned.

As a Massage Therapist, I know every body is incredibly different. When you go to feel something on one person, it will feel completely different on the next. My teacher reminded us to practice on as many different folks as possible. It’s why I had my parents over. They are old, er, I mean wise. They’re very wise. 😂 When trying to find points in the Lung and Large Intestine Channels I use landmarks in the body to help guide me. Well, because my parent are so “wise,” it means there will be more wrinkles, er, I mean signs of a life well lived. Okay, I’m going to stop here before my parents kill me. Just know they helped me learn a lot.

At 4:30 AM, I woke my partner up and told him I needed his body. Get your mind out of the gutters! It was purely for Academic purposes.

Working and running my clinic while attending school full-time has its challenges. I was smoked when I got home at 7 PM so I opted to go to bed earlier and rise at 3:00 AM to finish my studies. Crazy to some but my brain functions better this way.

Pictured here is me learning the Large Intestine Points and Location. You can’t tell but Shawn’s arm has tiny markings on them (many of them mistakes🤪).

The Large Intestine Does the following:

*Distributes Qi to face and head
*Regulates Body Fluids
*Circulates Qi to arm, shoulder, and neck
*Maintains the normal function of the L.I
*Clears heat from blood and Channels
*Tonifies Qi and Blood

Thank you for coming to my impromptu study session.

I am so dang happy about the way these turned out! Thank you to of East 7th.

If your company needs branded merch I HIGHLY recommend working with East 7th. They captured my vision perfectly. They give you a wide variety of material options and colors to work with. These shirts are so comfy and breatheable. I can’t wait to wear this to work and I can’t wait to surprise my cohort with these.

Coffee conisuers will know what this is. Acupuncturists may scratch their heads wondering if this is a new Acupuncture tool on the market? Don’t worry guys, it’s NOT a new torture tool that someday I will use when I’m a licensed Acupuncturist. 😂

My friends, I present to you, the WDT (Weiss Distribution Tool)! Accupuncture needles are an almost universally unknown asset to the espresso machine owner. One stirs the coffee while it sits in the portafilter. A funnel placed above the portafilter helps prevent spills. The stirring action breaks up any clumps, and evens out the density of coffee within the puck.Adding this technique to the coffee puck preparation process aids in reducing channeling, and produces higher quality and more even extractions. Voilà! The perfect cup of coffee.

Now, typically you’ll need to replace the needle sets every so often. I mean, I know my partner is happy for me that I’m learning something I’m passionate about but I also think he’s stoked that eventually I’ll have acupuncture needles on hand to elevate his coffee experience. 😅 ☕️

Side note: if you want the most delicious coffee 🫘, checkout . It’s all we drink in our household. ❤️

We’re learning the Lung Points this week. 🫁 These points do SO much. Everything from clearing a cough, some phlegm, or wheezing to supporting you through heavy grief, The Lung Channel is pretty amazing! I suspect many folks will need support from these points as we head into the Winter months.

I found body pens on-line to help me draw the points on myself and others. Hopefully my clients won’t be weirded out by my markings over the coming months. 😂

Also, if any clients want me to practice taking their blood pressure or finding the Lung Points, let me know! Every body is so different so the more opportunity I have to
palpate different folks the better.

Well, this was intended to be a study aid but my partner suggested we use it for a Halloween decoration. I think he’s trying to find a supportive way for me to indulge in holiday cheer without us buying more s$& #. 😅

In the Chinese Medicine program at NUNM, we are required to take business courses throughout our 4 years. Personally, I love this. I wish I would have had this built into my undergraduate work. Although I already have a business, I am loving being exposed to new books, new mentors, and other new valuable resources.

I have a project coming up. We are to interview a Acupuncture Business owner that we really admire and who we think demonstrates business practices that align with where we desire to be within our own Acupuncture practice. Instantly, Whitney Green of Pinnacle Wellness came to my mind.

Whitney and I met nearly 7 years ago in a networking group. I was instantly drawn to her not just because of who she was as an acupuncturist and human (she’s phenomenal so you really should book with her) but also how she ran her business. Anytime I have a question, I defer to her. I value her experience and perspectives immensley. It was wonderful to have her support through the pandemic. I honestly don’t know how I would have survived.

Whitney is one of the most ethical business owners I’ve ever met. When I’m doing my taxes for the business, I often think, “what would Whitney do?” 😂 She is involved in her community not just in providing Acupuncture but in her volunteer work. She works heavily with Tigard Chamber and The Rotary Club. She inspires me everyday with how I want to interact with my community.

My goal is to purchase my own building after school. Whitney and her husband purchased their own clinic last year. It was very helpful to discuss the ins and outs. It is a lot of work! We also had a candid conversation about paying off student loan debt. While that may not be a fun topic to discuss at 7:15 AM, it is extremely relevant. I don’t want sugar-coated. I want a realistic understanding of what I need to do to reach my goals. I feel much clearer on steps I need to take after receiving Whitney’s mentoring. I don’t know what the future holds but I am very grateful for business owners like Whitney. I feel bad I made her talk about the IRS and Loans at 7:15 AM but it was extremely informative. 😂
