Testosterone is known for its motivating effects, driving us to be active and engaged in the world. It's also crucial for our s*x drive and overall energy levels. However, there's a lot more to testosterone than meets the eye.
People often think of high testosterone as making someone angry or upset all the time, but that's not quite accurate. While high levels can increase aggression, it doesn't necessarily make one super emotional.
So, where does testosterone come from? It all starts with cholesterol. Whether you have testicles or ovaries, your body uses cholesterol to produce this vital hormone. For those with testicles, most of your testosterone is made there. If you have ovaries, you produce some testosterone in them, but also in your adrenal glands.
We all need testosterone for a healthy life. It helps create s***m cells in males, boosts s*x drive, energy, and supports our cardiovascular system and brain function. However, as we age, testosterone levels can decrease, leading to what is often called "andropause."
Signs of decreasing testosterone include a loss of libido, muscle mass reduction, lack of energy, and even brain fog. On the flip side, too much testosterone can lead to acne, facial hair growth, and male pattern baldness.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms and are concerned about your hormone levels, we're here to help. Give us a call at Northwest Integrative Medicine, and let's figure out what's going on together.
