Happily working toward solutions to the fentanyl crisis.
Today addiction recovery providers, outreach peers and law enforcement are participating in a pilot program to connect people living on the streets who use drugs with vital services.
Today is our 10th pilot shift, working with Portland Police Bureau NRT Bike Squad, Oregon State Police, Miracles Club, Recovery Works NW, Northwest Instituto Latino de Adicciones, Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon, and the Multnomah County, Oregon Behavioral Health Resource Center helping folks access detox, treatment, Medication Assisted Treatment, peer support, and more.
To give you an idea of how scarce resources are, even with the additional infusion of funds from M110 - today outreach peers were told there were two detox beds available in the entire city. Those beds were filled in the first couple hours of today’s shift, and it’s both inspiring and heartbreaking to see how these trained peers work every resource and angle to get people help when there are still not enough services available.
One thing we’re learning from the pilot - people are desperate to get help, and it isn’t necessary to criminalize them to get them into services. When rapid access to low-barrier care is available, we’re better able to meet people where they are and get them into care during what is often a very short window of time when they may be ready and willing to accept help.
