A powerfully good message by my friend Stephen Porter:

THE WALL
A Call to Stay Within the Fire

“For I,” says the Lord, “will be a wall of fire all around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.”
—Zechariah 2:5

Beloved, the wall is not imaginary.
And it is not restrictive.

It is protective.

Zechariah was shown a vision of Jerusalem without physical walls—and the Lord Himself stepped forward and said, I will be her wall. Not stone. Not mortar. Fire.

This wall is the holy boundary of God’s presence around His people.
It is formed by His Word.
Strengthened by prayer.
Guarded through obedience.
Maintained by fellowship.

And at the very center of that wall stands Christ Himself—the glory in the midst.

The wall is not meant to keep you in prison.
It is meant to keep you alive.

Scripture often speaks of God’s people as a walled garden, a hedged vineyard, a people kept by His power. As long as the heart remains near the center—near the glory—the fire does its work. Nothing touches what the fire surrounds.

But the danger never begins with an open door.

It begins with a step toward the edge.

No one wakes up and decides to abandon God. The first movement is almost unnoticeable. Prayer shortens. The Word becomes optional. Fellowship feels heavy instead of joyful. What once burned now feels distant.

And slowly, without realizing it, the soul drifts closer to the wall.

Not to cross it.
Just to stand near it.

That is when the sounds begin.

From the other side of the wall comes a familiar music—old rhythms, old excitements, old cravings that once ruled the heart. It doesn’t roar. It sings. And the closer you get, the clearer it becomes.

This is how seduction works.

Darkness does not shout your name—it whispers memories.

And then comes the most dangerous moment of all.

You peek.

The wall that once felt distant is now close enough to touch. A ladder appears—curiosity, compromise, justification. You tell yourself, I’m not leaving. I like the protection. I just want to see.

But beloved, no one climbs a ladder without intention.

The enemy cannot touch a soul resting in the center of the fire. But the moment the head rises above the wall, he sees. And he knows exactly how to pull.

The tragedy is this:
The world has not changed—but memory has softened.

The thrill looks brighter than it is.
The cost looks smaller than it will be.
And the fall comes faster than expected.

Some are standing at the wall right now.
Some already have the ladder in place.
And some—grieved to say—have already crossed.

And no one falls faster than those who know better.

Conviction becomes crushing.
Guilt becomes overwhelming.
And the soul that once knew the fire now finds itself cold and exposed.

But hear this clearly—the wall is still standing.

The fire has not gone out.
And the glory has not moved.

Scripture says a bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish. What looks like failure to you is still recoverable to Him. The cross still stands in the center of the wall—and judgment there always leads to victory.

If peace and joy has faded, He can restore it.
If the light has dimmed, He can rekindle it.

Beloved, where are you standing?

Are you resting deep in the center—satisfied in Christ?
Are you drifting toward the wall—listening again to old sounds?
Is there a ladder in place?
Or have you already crossed and now ache for the way back?

Do not linger.
Do not negotiate.
Do not delay.

Run.

Turn your back on the wall.
Forsake every false satisfaction.
Leave the ladder behind.

There is nothing on the other side worth losing the fire.

The Lord is still your wall.
Jesus is still the glory in the midst.
And the safest place your soul will ever know is near Him.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
If my heart has wandered , draw me back.
If I have stood too near the wall, turn me again to the fire.
Restore my peace and joy. Rekindle the light.
I forsake every divided affection and choose You alone. There is nothing in my heart but to follow You.

Dear friend, come back to the center.
Stay close to the fire.
And never look over that wall again.

With Love,
Steve Porter

A HEART CALLED HOME
A Clarion Call to Sacred Union With God

“I’ll make you my bride forever.
I’ll make you my bride in righteousness and justice,
in love and mercy.
I’ll make you my bride in faithfulness,
and you’ll know me, GOD, for who I really am.”
—Hosea 2:19–20 (MSG)

Let me speak softly for a moment.

Not as a judge.
Not as someone standing above you.
But as someone who knows—firsthand—how easy it is to wander without noticing.

Not to run.
Not to rebel.
Just to slowly… slide.

Still praying.
Still worshiping.
Still showing up.

And yet something inside feels divided.

You do love Jesus.
That part is true.

But if you’re honest, there are other affections tugging at you too. Quiet ones. Subtle ones. Not obvious sins—but competing loves.

Comfort.
Approval.
Distraction.
The desire to be seen.
The need to feel safe, admired, or in control.

Nothing loud.
Nothing scandalous.

Just enough to pull your heart slightly off-center.

And sometimes I wonder—have we learned how to give Jesus our hands while giving the world our heart?

This isn’t a rebuke.
It’s grief.
I’m asking myself the same question.

It’s the ache of someone who sees what divided love does to the soul.

Scripture doesn’t shy away from this language. God Himself chose it.

In Hosea, the Lord tells a story so raw it almost feels uncomfortable. He asks His prophet to love a woman who will not remain faithful. Not once. Not twice. Again and again.

Why?

Because God wanted us to understand something about His heart.

What it feels like when the one He loves keeps turning away.
What it costs Him when His people chase lesser loves.

“She adorned herself… and went after her lovers, but forgot Me.”

Forgot Me.

Those might be some of the saddest words in all of Scripture.

Not angry words.
Wounded ones.

This isn’t theology written from a distance.
This is heartbreak spoken from within covenant.

God isn’t looking for part of you.
He never has been.

He doesn’t compete.
He doesn’t share.
He doesn’t settle for divided affection.

Not because He is demanding—but because He is faithful.

The deeper life isn’t about adding disciplines or refining performance. It’s about undivided surrender. A heart no longer split between voices. A love no longer pulled in two directions.

We can’t live with one foot in worship and one foot in compromise.
We can’t sing about holiness while quietly nurturing what Christ came to free us from.

I know this is weighty.
But hear me—it’s spoken with tender love and compassion.

The world doesn’t love you.
It flatters, then drains.
Promises, then disappears.

Jesus is the only One who cherishes your soul.

And here is the mercy—this is where the story turns.

Hosea didn’t discard his unfaithful bride.
He went after her.
He paid to bring her home.

So did Jesus.

He didn’t abandon you when your heart wandered.
He didn’t withdraw when you struggled.
He came closer.

Even now, He stands at the door.
Not accusing.
Not shaming.
Just waiting.

He isn’t asking for perfection.
He’s asking for return.

Your whole heart.
Your honest yes.
Your unguarded surrender.

So let me ask—quietly, tenderly—

Have other loves been sharing space in your heart?
Have lesser things been receiving what belongs to Him alone?

It’s not too late.

The lamp is still burning.
The table is still set.
The covenant still stands.

Come home, dear one.
Away from the noise.
Away from the glitter.
Away from what never truly satisfied.

Come back home to the One who never stopped loving you.

A PRAYER OF COMING HOME

Jesus,

I’ve felt the pull.
I’ve allowed my heart to scatter.
I’ve reached for things that promised comfort but left me empty.

Somewhere along the way,
my love grew distracted.

But today, I hear You again.
Not loud.
Not forceful.
Just faithful.

Forgive me for divided affection.
For subtle compromise.
For giving pieces of my heart away.

I turn back—fully.
I renounce every false attachment.
Every counterfeit comfort.
Every quiet replacement for You.

I come out of the noise
and back into Your arms.

Restore what’s been dulled.
Heal what’s been torn.
Seal my heart again as Yours.

You are my first love.
My true love.
My lasting love.

I belong to You.

In Jesus Glorious Name
Amen.
