The scholarship committee awarded six scholarships this year. Each student completed a lengthy application and provided two letters of reference. Applicants were selected based on academic standing, leadership experience, civic involvement, and their commitment to rural Iowa and the agricultural community. Each student participated in a brief interview with our scholarship committee, which included Kaitlin Walton, Dustin Marolf, Noah Coppess and Lakaya Tenley.

Our final recipient is Zoe Holstein, the daughter of Ross and Jill Holstein of Tipton. She will be studying Marketing at Kirkwood. When asked, "Specifically indicate if (and why) you have plans to come back to Iowa and/or your community. What do those plans include?” Zoe responded: “I want to stay in Iowa because with my career in marketing I want to bring attention to Iowa. People usually just brush past us. With the help of marketing and social media, I can help boost the publicity of Iowa and all it has to offer. I specifically want to work for a sports team and help boost them while also showing that Iowa could have a major sports team here because we are just as deserving as other big states. Putting Iowa on the map with a major sports team would bring lots of attention to us. If you look at all that college sports have done for Iowa, a major league sport would do great here. Putting a major league sports team here, and having it help publicize Iowa, will help farmers because with a major sports team comes ads and we can use those ads to promote places in Iowa like is done with college sports. I also hope to help put more Iowa colleges on the map because every school is good at something and deserves to be noticed like all the big colleges in Iowa. College sports have helped put Iowa on the map.”

Congratulations, Zoe!

Clay Bohlmann, the son of Jake and Teresa Bohlmann of Tipton, is currently studying Agriculture Business at Kirkwood. When asked, " Why is agriculture important to you and your family?" Clay responded: “It is how my Family lives. Both of my parents work in agricultural fields. I was raised to appreciate farming, and I appreciated it so much, It's what I want to do the rest of my life. It seems like the best way for me to make a living. It has had so much of an impact on my life. Good and bad. You learn to appreciate the good things and the not-so-good things.”

Congratulations, Clay!

Caleb Bohlmann is our forth recipient. He is the son of Jake and Teresa Bohlmann of Tipton, he will be studying Diesel Technologies at Kirkwood. When asked, "Explain how your academic goals align with current events/trends and the needs of rural Iowa communities.” Caleb responded: “My academic goals are to get through schooling in 2 years and become a diesel mechanic. This is very important, especially in rural Iowa towns because over the years you are finding less and less new technicians. It seems like whenever I talk to somebody that is a diesel mechanic about it they always say they need more mechanics or they're swamped with work because there is not enough help to even the load. A lot of big companies are even trying to get people's schooling to be sponsored by the employer if they agree to come back and work for them for an extended period of time. I believe my academic goals will align very well with trying to get the trends turned around and get more technicians in the shops to make sure that small towns and communities can rely on us to be fast, reliable, and good at what we do.”

Congratulations, Caleb!

Avery Caspary, the daughter of Bryan and Dawn Caspary of Clarence, will continue her education at Iowa State University. When asked, "How will your field of study and future plans support the mission of Iowa Farm Bureau (creating a vibrant future for agriculture, farm families, and their communities), rural Iowa, and the vitality of agriculture?" Avery responded: “After high school, I plan to attend Iowa State University. At Iowa State, I am undecided on my official major, but I have a pull towards Journalism. The future with a degree in Journalism would allow me to help advocate for Farm Bureau. As new generations come, new trends and phrases arise. As a journalist, I can bring awareness and education in simple, relatable ways. By educating the public about where food comes from and the importance of farming. While also informing and correcting misinformation talked about by the public. As someone who grew up with a strong connection to my community, I could interview and report about local farmers and their stories. Rural towns need to be educated on who their local farmers are and their experiences, both good and bad. Something that is not always talked about is Farmer Representation. Touching on this topic would boost farmers' perspectives on mainstream media platforms, while also showing the real challenges farmers face, and helping to humanize farming instead of categorizing it as an industry.”

Congratulations, Avery!

Our second scholarship recipient is Tara Hennings, the daughter of Randy and Stacey Hennings of Bennett. She will be studying Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Iowa. When asked, "Why are you a good investment for Farm Bureau if you are selected for a scholarship?” Tara responded: “I am a good investment for Farm Bureau because I have a background in agriculture that has given me the knowledge and an appreciation for everything our farmers do. Along with this, I was born and raised in a small community and plan on returning to my rural life after receiving my degree. I want the best for my town and am willing to invest my time and effort into seeing it succeed in the future. With the scholarship money I will focus hard on my studies and future career in hopes of making a difference in my rural community.”

Congratulations, Tara!

First up is Weston Dircks, the son of Gene and Lisa Dircks of Lowden, is studying Ag Studies at Iowa State University with a minor in Agronomy. When asked, " Specifically indicate if (and why) you have plans to come back to Iowa and/or your community. What do those plans include?" Weston responded: “Yes, I plan to come back to my community in Iowa because this is where my family and legacy are. My community has always been near and dear to me; my upbringing in rural Iowa has made me very fond of our culture. Everyone knows each other's names and looks out for one another. I don't think I would have it any other way. I plan to return to my community after my time at Iowa State University and take over my family farm to continue the legacy started by my ancestors.”

Congratulations, Weston!

Come back tomorrow to see our next recipient.

March was a buzz-y month for Cedar County Ag in the Classroom. Teresa Bohlmann, ISU’s Outreach Educator focused on “From Pollinator to Product” as the lesson spanning across 225 students in person. She read the story “The Beeman” to discuss foods that we eat that have been pollinated, followed up by a crayon activity. This program was also delivered virtually (with classroom kits delivered) to 545 students.

ISU and Cedar County Farm Bureau also co-hosted a story time session at Brother’s Market in Tipton, to share the importance of pollinators for our produce and food.
