I get a lot of questions about the name behind our private practice and logo, so I thought I’d share.
The name comes from Camp Hopewell, a camp my brothers and I attended when we were children. It was designed for underprivileged children associated with the foster care system. Hopewell was more than just a camp — it was a place where we could just be kids. We didn’t have to worry about having enough food, the electricity being turned off, or the chaos that comes from having parents who struggle with addiction. It was one of the best memories I have as a child.
At Camp Hopewell, there was a zip line that stretched between two large trees. The first time I decided to try it, I remember standing in line, slowly walking up the stairs, watching other kids ride it without fear. The higher I climbed on the stairs, the more nervous I became.
When it was finally my turn, I reached the landing, I told the camp counselor I was too scared and that I was going to walk back down the stairs.
Instead of pushing me or minimizing my fear, the he
asked me to place my hand on the tree beside me. He explained how I could trust the tree — how it was strong, sturdy, and dependable. It had been doing its job for years, providing safety. He shared with me that it was okay to be scared, but I could choose to trust something that was already steady.
I decided to go ahead and ride the zip line, and when I reached the other side, it became a true confidence-building moment for me. Hence the tree logo.
So often, people come to therapy feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure if they can take the next step. Therapy isn’t about forcing bravery or rushing change. It’s about creating a space that feels safe, steady, and trustworthy — a place where growth can happen when you’re ready.
Sometimes healing begins by simply placing your hand on something solid and realizing you don’t have to do it alone. 🌳
