New to hooping or not sure what size hoop you need?
The most common question when starting out is,
βWhat size hoop should I start with?β βοΈβοΈβοΈ
Hereβs the super short version so you can learn the basics right here.
β¨ Tubing size (5/8 vs 3/4):
5/8" tubing is thinner, lighter, and snappier. Best for off-body tricks and fast, techy flow.
3/4" tubing is thicker, heavier, and more stable. Best for on-body hooping like waist, hips, shoulders.
β¨ Hoop diameter (overall size):
I measure by inner diameter (ID). Bigger hoops move slower and are easier to learn on, especially for on-body hooping.
Smaller hoops move faster and are better for off-body tricks and quick combos.
β¨ Beginner size range:
Most beginners do well with a hoop around 38" to 42" in diameter. Roughly between your waist and chest when standing it up next to you.
Smaller βtrickβ hoops are usually 34" and under, with 22" to 32" common for more advanced off-body flow.
β¨ Matching hoop to your style:
For relaxed, on-body hooping (waist, hips, chest, neck), a larger diameter with 3/4" tubing is usually your best friend.
For fast, techy, off-body flow and combos, a smaller diameter with 5/8" tubing is usually ideal. You can also mix and match like a small hoop with 3/4" tubing to get a hybrid feel.
β¨ Beginner tips:
When in doubt, size up, not down. Starting bigger makes learning much easier and more comfortable.
Donβt stress about finding βthe one perfect hoopβ right away. Your ideal size may change as your flow style evolves.
β¨ Mindset:
Your hoop is a tool for your creative expression! There is no βwrongβ style, only what feels good in your body. Hooping is for all ages, all body types, and all kinds of flow.
