Teamwork in action 💪

In the OR, we tackled a complex wrist fracture with an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Working side-by-side with my PA-C, everything went smoothly—from exposure to fixation—and the result was a stable, anatomic repair we’re proud of.

These are the moments that highlight the value of preparation, precision, and a strong surgical team. Looking forward to seeing this patient get back to doing what they love!

Friday evening, Dr. Charley B. Gates , Orthopedic Surgeon, was honored by our parent hospital and by his physician peers as the “Philanthropist of the Year.”

Dr. Gates exemplifies the highest ideals of the medical profession through his unwavering commitment to both patient care and community service. As a dedicated physician and compassionate humanitarian, Dr. Gates has consistently leveraged his medical expertise, leadership, and personal resources to improve the health and well-being of underserved populations.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gates has demonstrated that medicine extends far beyond the walls of a clinic. He has volunteered countless hours for an organization called TASH, Inc. TASH, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that founded and supports La Clínica del Pueblo, a nonprofit hospital, along with other partner organizations working to bring hope and opportunity to marginalized communities in Oaxaca, Mexico. Dr. Gates has been on the Board of TASH, Inc. since 2012 and currently serves as the Board President. He has traveled to Oaxaca twice annually for many years making a personal impact with the people of the region.

Oaxaca, located in Southern Mexico, is still considered in the top two Mexican states in economic poverty. With an average wage around $4 USD per day, the majority of the population can’t access basic health, education or other social services.

TASH, Inc. aims to continue to strive for impact by providing quality and affordable hospital care services, nutrition and agricultural programming, community engagement, youth leadership, and first stage intervention for street children.

In addition to his clinical volunteerism and philanthropic efforts with TASH, Inc.; Dr. Gates has been a generous giver locally.

What sets Dr. Gates apart is his deep belief that every person deserves access to compassionate, high-quality care. His humility, generosity, and dedication inspire those around him and reflect the very spirit of service that this award seeks to recognize.

Looks like Andrew and I may have some serious competition in the office now! 👀
These bobblehead lookalikes were a Doctor’s Day surprise, and we’re still trying to decide…
👉 Are they a little too accurate? 😆
We’re thinking the real question is:
Do the bobbleheads chart faster and take fewer tea breaks? ☕️
Happy Doctor’s Day to our amazing providers who always keep things moving—both in the OR and around the office! 👏🦴

We recently treated a patient in the office with a very swollen knee. After performing a knee aspiration, we removed 60 cc of fluid—providing immediate relief and helping us get answers. The fluid tested positive for Lyme disease.

Lyme arthritis is a later-stage manifestation of Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It commonly presents as significant swelling of a joint—most often the knee—even with surprisingly little pain. When identified, it is very treatable with antibiotics, but early recognition is key.

Here in northwestern PA, this is something we see more often than many realize. Pennsylvania is considered a high-incidence state for Lyme disease and consistently reports some of the highest case numbers in the country, with tens of thousands of estimated cases each year.

If you have unexplained joint swelling—don’t ignore it. Lyme arthritis is very real in our region, and early evaluation can make all the difference.

Did you know that what you eat can play a big role in how your joints feel every day? Inflammation in the body can worsen joint pain, stiffness, and arthritis symptoms—but the right foods can help fight it!

Here are a few simple ways to support healthier joints through nutrition:

🥑 Choose Anti-Inflammatory Foods
Fill your plate with foods that help calm inflammation such as:
• Fatty fish like salmon and tuna
• Leafy greens (spinach, kale)
• Berries
• Nuts and seeds
• Olive oil

💧 Stay Hydrated
Water helps keep cartilage soft and joints lubricated. Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day to help your joints move smoothly.

⚖️ Maintain a Healthy Weight
Extra weight puts additional stress on your joints—especially your knees, hips, and ankles. Even small changes in weight can significantly reduce joint pressure and pain.

🥗 Make Simple Swaps
Try these easy changes:
• Swap fried foods for grilled or baked options
• Choose whole grains instead of refined carbs
• Replace sugary snacks with fruit or yogurt

Your joints work hard for you every day—fuel them with foods that help them stay strong and healthy! 💪

If joint pain is slowing you down, our orthopedic team is here to help you get back to doing what you love.

Debbie reminds us that a successful total knee replacement isn’t just about the surgery—it’s about the entire journey before, during, and after. Every step plays a role in getting our patients back to doing what they love!

Before surgery, we focus on optimizing your health. This includes medical clearance, strengthening exercises, and education so you know exactly what to expect. The stronger and more prepared you are going in, the smoother your recovery can be.

On surgery day, a skilled team works together—from surgeons and anesthesia providers to nurses and surgical techs—to ensure a safe and efficient procedure. Our goal is not only to replace the joint, but to set the foundation for a successful recovery.

Recovery begins right away! Early movement, pain control, and guided care help reduce complications and improve outcomes. Our team will support you every step of the way, whether you’re recovering at home or in a rehab setting.

Physical therapy is where progress truly takes shape. Strengthening, mobility, and consistency are key. Our therapists become a vital part of your recovery team, helping you regain independence and confidence.

💙 It truly takes a village—surgeons, nurses, therapists, and most importantly, you. Your dedication and commitment make all the difference.

Thinking about knee replacement or have questions about recovery? We’re here to help guide you every step of the way!
