Scientists Discover a Simple Dental Habit That Protects the Brain”
Flossing has always been promoted as a way to protect teeth and gums, but new research suggests it might also protect the brain and heart. A large U.S. study following more than 6,000 people for 25 years has revealed that those who floss regularly had a significantly lower risk of suffering strokes caused by blood clots, as well as irregular heartbeats such as atrial fibrillation.
The numbers are striking. Flossing was linked to a 22% lower risk of ischemic stroke, a 44% lower risk of clots traveling from the heart, and a 12% lower risk of atrial fibrillation. These benefits were independent of brushing or dentist visits—meaning the act of flossing itself played a unique role.
Scientists believe the explanation lies in inflammation. Gum infections and untreated plaque can trigger long-term inflammation that stiffens arteries and disrupts heart rhythms. By removing plaque, flossing reduces infection and inflammation, lowering the risk of life-threatening complications far beyond the mouth.
It’s rare that a habit this small and inexpensive shows such a wide-reaching impact. A simple piece of floss, used regularly, may quietly become one of the most powerful tools for protecting both oral health and brain health.
