SPF Tips! ⬇️
🧴SPF is the most important part of any skin care regimen and plays a crucial role in protecting our skin from harmful UV radiation. SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, indicates the level of protection a sunscreen provides against UVB radiation, which is primarily responsible for sunburn and contributes to skin cancer development.
☀️UV radiation in general can cause sunburn, premature aging, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher is recommended to protect against both UVB and UVA rays. Mineral sunscreens (love our Alastin sunscreens for this!) provide extra protection, including protection against visible light which can cause pigment and redness.
☀️Regular use of sunscreen with adequate SPF can significantly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma among others. By creating a barrier between the skin and harmful UV radiation, sunscreen helps prevent DNA damage and mutations that can lead to skin cancer.
🕶️Skin cancer prevention is a year-round effort, not just during the summer months or sunny days. Incorporating SPF into your daily skincare routine, regardless of the weather or season, is essential for maintaining healthy skin and reducing the risk of skin cancer.
🧴It’s important to remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if swimming, sweating, or engaging in activities that may compromise sunscreen efficacy. Even water-resistant sunscreens can wear off over time, so consistent reapplication is key to maintaining adequate protection against UV radiation.
👒In addition to sunscreen, practicing other sun safety measures, such as seeking shade during peak sun hours, wearing protective clothing, including wide brim hats and sunglasses, and avoiding tanning beds, further reduces the risk of skin cancer.
