Lucas County Emergency Management Agency to begin monthly Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) tests starting Aug. 1

TOLEDO, Ohio — Beginning Friday, August 1, 2025, the Lucas County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will launch monthly test messages using the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system through FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) platform.

These test messages will be sent at noon on the first Friday of each month, aligning with the county’s regular outdoor warning siren tests. The goal of this initiative is to routinely test public alerting systems and ensure residents are familiar with the methods used to deliver critical emergency information.
Important information:

Real-world emergency alerts (e.g., severe weather, hazardous materials, evacuations) are automatically delivered to all compatible cell phones — no opt-in required.
Test alerts, however, require users to manually enable test messages in their phone settings. Residents who wish to receive these monthly test notifications are encouraged to check their phone settings and ensure “Test Alerts” are turned on. Instructions may vary by device and carrier.
When received, the alert will include a unique tone and vibration, similar to an AMBER Alert.
The Test Alert details will read, “This is a Test of the Lucas County, Ohio public alert and warning system. Not action is required.”
By coordinating these WEA/IPAWS tests with the monthly siren tests, Lucas County aims to create a consistent and recognizable time for residents to expect and become familiar with emergency alerting activity.

Lucas County’s IPAWS capability is offered in addition to its opt-in system, Lucas County Alerts, which delivers emergency and community notifications by text and email.

The Ohio Department of Medicaid is now accepting applications for its Beneficiary Advisory Council (BAC). This council gives individuals and families with lived experience the chance to directly shape Medicaid policy and share feedback on what’s working—and what needs to change.

Who can apply?
Current or former Medicaid members
Parents, caregivers, or guardians of someone on Medicaid
Both paid and unpaid caregivers

Why this matters:
This is your chance to make your voice heard at the state level and help ensure Ohio’s Medicaid program is equitable, effective, and informed by real experiences. Member of the BAC will provide critical input on barriers to care, needed services, and ways the system can better support members.
