Mornings were the hardest when I was homeless. It’s a cruel world you wake up to…no bathroom to relieve yourself in, nobody to roll over and smile at you, and breakfast is usually quite an accomplishment.
And when you’re sick, all of that is magnified and you feel defeated before you even rise from your makeshift bed.
That is why I think these are some of the most thoughtful blessing bags we’ve ever received. When I was out there, gas stations and quick marts often allow people to get hot water from their coffee dispenser, so it's perfect for someone who doesn't get hot breakfast often.
Making blessing bags is such a fun activity, too! Make them at family gatherings, or you can get your coworkers, any group you belong to, or just use it as a good excuse to get some old friends together to laugh and spread some love out into your community as a group.
A big bonus of doing them as a group is if everyone buys a few of the items it’s super cheap! Especially since so much can be found at dollar stores!
I can tell you as a person who slept on the sidewalk on Skid Row and was kicked, spat on, was called worthless, lazy, and worse…the random acts of kindness are few and far between a whole lot of struggle and trauma and you really feel them.
Blessing bags are such an easy thing to throw in your car and hand to someone and really make a difference…because it’s not so much about what’s in the bag, but the fact that the person handed it to you. They didn’t judge you, say anything hateful, or do what most people do….turn away…you feel SEEN and a bit lifted up.
We all have to ability to love unconditionally and change the world around us a little and these little acts of kindness…these simple zip loc bags of necessities can just maybe change a life ❤️
