The Original Christmas Gift & Gathering!
Christmas gifts and gatherings….that is what many people think represents this holiday season, the giving of presents to loved ones and the gift / blessing of having family all together to celebrate the season. Gifts come in all sizes, wrapped in colorful or plain paper, thoughtfully decorated with bows or handcrafted art perhaps from a small child. Family gatherings also come in all sizes whether just immediate family members or with extended relatives. Dr. Pickens and I cherished this holiday as all 3 of our sons were together this year!
The greatest Christmas gift and blessing IS about a newborn son and HIS family - an infant born in Bethlehem surrounded by a host of HIS heavenly family and celebrated by HIS new earthly family because God HIS Father so loved us….
Always remember the reason for Christmas as we gather with our loved ones, and show our appreciation and joy of heaven’s unmatcheable gift of JESUS!

Is Your Attitude Aligned with Gratitude? At ABA we are focused on "aligning" your health through chiropractic care and balanced nutrition. But the one thing that we as practitioners can not do is re-align a patient's outlook on life and the world, sometimes unfortunately this prevents true wellness . Looking at the world through GRATITUDE is like putting on a new pair of prescription lens and suddenly your eyes are open and everything becomes crystal clear and you "see " things that you've been missing out on! This new perspective of being thankful will powerfully affect the neuroendocrine system which in turn impacts the efficacy of our immune system and overall health. So find ways to shift your focus to the positive! One of the best things about thankfulness is that the more you choose it, the easier it gets. The more you profess gratitude, the more you notice things to be grateful for.

Open Your Eyes To Gratitude - What Are You Grateful For?

This Holiday Season Practice Gratitude for your Loved Ones and Other Blessings
Psalm 9:1
I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

ABA is Grateful for ALL of YOU!

Foods like red cabbage, purple rice, blueberries, blackberries, and Japanese sweet potatoes contain anthocyanins which are have extraordinary antioxidant properties. Nutrition the Neglected Discipline by Physicians

Optimal nutrition is foundational for preventing chronic illnesses and living a vibrant long life, yet a recent Medscape online survey by U.S. physicians believe only half of their patients would benefit from working with a nutrition professional to improve their diet! What is even more astounding is that out of all the 1005 physician specialists that responded to the survey, gastroenterologists said that only 43% of their patients could benefit from nutritional counseling!

This trend should give everyone cause for alarm! There is an epidemic of chronic illness and obesity in this country and perhaps this lack of preventative care is the reason the US health care system ranked DEAD LAST in a comparison of 1o similar wealthy democracies by the Commonwealth Fund - in fact the US was so far below their peer countries that they were considered in an (unfortunate) class all their own!
I thought that a comment made from Stephen Devries, MD ( Preventative Cardiologist / Associate Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) was the most relevant regarding the Medscape study "...the true number of patients that could benefit from nutritional guidance, including the conditions of hypertension, high blood fats, digestive disorders, food allergies, is 100% and needs to be included in the care of EVERY patient."

At ABA we Aim to Change this Paradigm of Sick Care and Focus on PREVENTION! If you or a loved one could benefit from functional nutritional assessment, call us today!

Being a nutritionist focused on wellness, I often have to point out lifestyle choices that interfere with a person's path to their ultimate goal of true health. No other subject than exercise, elicits so many negative responses from my clients …. "I have no time" "I don't like to exercise" "I see no benefit (weight loss)" "My joints hurt too much" "I'm too old & tired." etc, etc! But what if I told you that stimulating the genes for a long life-span requires daily movement? Let's look at some of the ways that an individual can incorporate exercise into their everyday life - some of which are surprisingly easy to do!

MOVEMENT - A recent study investigated the link between mortality and time spent sitting - it found that individuals that sat for less than 30 minutes at a time had the lowest risk of early death. The study concluded that substituting 30 minutes of sitting with some form of low intensity exercise (ie,walking ) could reduce death by 17% and this percentage more than doubled if the exercise was increased to moderate to high intensity. So get up off that chair! If you watch more than 30 minutes of TV a day, add a stationary bike, a treadmill, or even a simple rebounder to the room!

WALKING / BIKING - Duke University has conducted several studies over the years in regards to depression / cognitive decline and exercise. Their research found that walking briskly 30 minutes a day, just 3 days a week was just as effective as taking the drug Zoloft in patients diagnosed with major depression. Another study, evaluated individuals age 65 and older with cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive decline on the effect of 30 minutes of continuous walking or stationary cycling or in combination with a heart healthy diet. After 6 months the group that exercised without changing diet showed significant improvement in cognitive function, but the combined exercise / heart healthy diet group showed an even more dramatic improvement in cognitive function - essentially reversing their brain's aging by 9 years!

OWN A DOG - The health benefit of owning a dog is pretty straight forward - the average canine owner adds 5 hours of exercise time to their week without even realizing it. Caring for an animal not only helps the physical state but has been proven to improve mental well-being. So thank your pup for all the benefits he or she provides!

HOUSEHOLD CHORES - People that live in the Blue Zones don't use conveniences when doing household chores. Manual labor is the key! Use some elbow grease when cleaning your home or get into the dirt outside with gardening. Don't hire that service to spread the mulch or w**d your flower beds. Even the simple act of chopping up veggies for the evening meal burns calories.

WEIGHTS and RESISTANCE TRAINING- Working out with weights once or twice a week can increase your metabolism and help turn on the genes of longevity. Studies have proven that even individuals in their 90's can make strides in strength, greatly improving their vitality! However guided, gradual increase in resistance is needed to make gains - lifting the same 2-5 lb weights over and over again will not get the needed results to improve metabolism and strength.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES / SPORTS Some sports, like tennis, cycling, soccer, jogging, and swimming, are all linked to longevity. Team or paired sports have the added benefit of social connectedness which also supports a longer life. My favorite outdoor activity besides walking Vincent, is paddleboarding; which helps with strength and balance - and I get to soak up the sun, boosting my vitamin D levels!

There are many other ways to stay active, such as hiking, team sports or even running marathons, but the key to any exercise is to engage in something you will continue to do and that you enjoy.

Just figure out a way to keep moving!

Confused About the Recent Studies on Multivitamins?
Why would one recent study indicate no link between longevity and another research found a benefit for improving cognitive function?
Here are my thoughts on the matter...
Many individuals bring in their personal supplements for me to review - I find that many of them contain poor quality ingredients with the incorrect, synthetic forms of vitamins or additives that simply just shouldn't be in the product. Unfortunately many people just waste their money because the body can not utilize these inferior forms of nutrients. In fact they can actually harm you!

In general, supplements should be derived from whole foods / nutrients to ensure optimal nutritional benefit for the body for any given condition. Sometimes this is difficult to decipher off the label, but in general a multivitamin or supplement should list recognizable foods or animal / plant extracts, such as kale, broccoli, beets, rice bran, sweet potato, and / or liver extracts. So why not take a handful of isolated nutrients? This is not how God designed our body to work! Taking high dose or synthetic nutrients is more like taking a medication, this strategy is only rarely needed in cases of severe deficiency. Side effects can result as the body becomes “off balance.” Whole food supplements like the foundational products ABA carries contain an array of enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, trace elements, and activators that are needed to work together as a synergistic complex.

Introducing St.Vincent da Paw… Our Part -Time Office Therapy Pup! Our dog Vincent will be joining our staff on most Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays when both Dr. Pickens and Nancy are working together. Vincent loves everyone and will be very happy to see you! He will be grateful if you pet him, he has excellent manners and won’t lick you. Vincent is lonely because he no longer has his canine companion at home, our other pup recently went over the rainbow bridge. We do realize that not everyone is a dog person, so if you have any reservations about coming in contact with Vincent, please call us before hand and we will make sure he is behind the front desk or in another room before you enter the office. Otherwise help us make Vincent comfortable in his part time “position”!😊
